    Tiny pinholes of light filtered into the secret hallway that Silas and I had fled into. Silas took care to keep back so each light wouldn’t touch his skin and burn him. Morning had come much quicker than I anticipated and as a result I hadn’t made a plan for what would happen if Silas was stuck in the house during the day.

    We need to find somewhere safe, I said.

    I thought about my sisters, far away from here in Silas’s house. Part of me missed the times when the only thing I had to worry about was waking up on time so we didn’t feel Mrs. Nenken’s wrath for being late for chores.

    But I was seeing our life much better than the reality. Beatings, hidden from the world. It was far from perfect, yet compared to the last few days, that life seemed full of hope and promise.

    Not anymore. Now my uncle wanted me dead, my lover was already dead, and my sisters wanted to run away and pretend like there were dead. So much death.

    This is as good a place as any, said Silas. He stopped in a place where the hallway jutted into a small nook. It was a decent place to hide and since no light whatsoever got into it, it would shelter us if anyone happened to be travelling down the passageways without knowing we were here. He slumped down against the far wall until he was sitting on the ground and closed his eyes. My strength has gone. I need rest.

    Of course, I said.

    His eyes opened briefly and I noticed they didn’t look as dark as they usually did. I figured it was a trick of the dimness in here. Will you stay with me? Till dark returns?

    I’ll be here, I whispered. Where else would I go? Besides, I needed my rest too, and perhaps a good sleep would restore my body and hopefully my mind at the same time.

    When he didn’t answer, just closed his eyes, I wondered if he was asleep already. I moved away and walked back into the hallway and toward the wall. Bending down, I looked through
