    ––––––––

I watched Silas drink the blood from one of Steven’s guard dogs. His fangs pierced the creatures neck and he drank like it was a matter of life and death.

I never liked the dogs, they terrified me with their sharp teeth and low growl, but that didn’t mean that the sight in front of me wasn’t terrifying me even more. It was like watching a horror movie, except I could smell the blood and gore in front of me.

Emma. Silas looked up as I approached and then back down to the dog in his arms. I could see that it was still breathing. Just. It had been drained of its strength but it would live if he stopped right now.

I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to run. I wanted to turn on my heels and get the hell out of there but I was frozen to the spot. Where would I go? Back inside? There was nowhere safe for me.

    What have you done, Silas?

I had to feed. He looked almost apologetic. I knew then that he wasn’t in control of himself when he was full of lust for blood. It had been the same when he drank from me. He became weak and powerless to the urge. The urge to stay alive by drinking others - that was no way to live.

It was me or the dog? Is that what you’re saying? Me or the dog. It seemed such an uncomplicated choice when I put it like that, but all the more complicated when I just watched him drain it.

Silas placed the dog on the ground. I saw the weak rise and fall of its chest as it struggled to stay alive. I had to feed, but the choice was not between you or the dog. You are far more important than any animal.

Will it live? Maybe if I knew the dog would survive I would feel better about all of this.

Yes. I didn’t take it all.

You have to feed. I let the words hang in the air as we both contemplated the truth. The notion I’d had that he was here to help me and give me strength was snatched away, as reality of what he really was hit me full force. You have to feed and kill.

He looked down at the dog and nodded. It’s who I am. Who I became when I got turned into this.

    What were you like before?

I was nothing before, and I’m still nothing. I’m sorry Emma. I should never have come here.

You’re not nothing. He wasn’t. He was something more than he believed he was, but even so, I couldn’t trust
