My eyes flicked open and I could see as clearly as if it were daytime even though no light entered the room. I didn’t know how long I had been sleeping or where I was. I sat up, but immediately wished I didn’t. Pain of such intensity rushed through my body so forcefully that I cried out. It felt like I was being filled with tiny sharp knives that were cutting and tearing my insides out, their jagged blades ripping each of my organs until I was nothing.

I fell back onto the bed struggling for breath. My chest rose and fell, and even that hurt more than anything I have ever experienced.

I could hear voices, familiar voices, whispering and plotting. Were they the ones that had done this to me? I tried to sit again, but the pain was too much. I was dying, I was sure of it.

As I lay my head back onto the pillow, I tried to remember what had happened before this. Everything was a blur and I couldn’t tell what was a dream and what was real. It all seemed so long ago that it was mere memory. A memory that had yet to fully form in my mind.

I remembered my uncle. I remembered the vampire.
