    ––––––––

Last night was as vivid in my memory as if it happened five minutes ago. Silas, the bloodsucking monster who knew my mother before she died, had flown me home in his arms and left me here before saying another word. I still had his blood inside me, saving me from the savage beating that my cruel uncle had given me for daring to be who I was.

I snuck through the window into my bedroom. It didn’t take long for me to fall asleep.

I slept deeply with vivid dreams. Dreams that had awakened something raw and primal inside me. I was no longer the same girl I was before the beating, that was clear, but who I was now and what it meant was something I still had to figure out.

    Emma.

I opened my eyes. My sister, Beth, was sitting at the end of my bed watching me. Her eyes were wide with concern and fear.

Good morning. I stretched my arms out from under the blankets and yawned sleepily.

You’re alive. She swallowed and gulped away air, not quite believing what she was seeing. I thought ...

I sat up, forgetting that I wore the silky robe that I had found in Silas’s bedroom. I grinned and slipped it off my back to show her that I was still whole. See, I’m fine.

Confusion crossed her face. But, you were ... he ... She shook her head. Did I dream it?

I placed my hand on her knee to comfort her fears. No. Steven did beat me. You weren’t dreaming, I was near death when you found me. Don’t you remember? Silas took me. He healed me. He saved me.

Silas? Who is Silas? She had no memory of him or what had happened after they had seen me beaten and bloody.

You mean the murderer? Rose was already dressed when she came out of our shared bathroom. The vampire.

Yes, I said. Him. He healed me.

Rose’s gaze drew over my bare skin and she narrowed one eye. What did you give him in return for that?

I pulled the robe tighter and grabbed the bed sheets to cover myself. Aren’t you pleased that I’m okay? That I’m not dead?

Her face twisted before softening. She sat down next to Beth. Of course I am. I didn’t mean it to sound like that.

The vampire helped you? Beth crinkled her brow. I don’t remember.

He probably hypnotized you into forgetting. They can do that. It felt strange that I would be talking so casually about this, but it was what it was.

Did he hypnotize you into sleeping with him? asked Rose.

I didn’t sleep with him. I could feel my annoyance toward my sister growing by the second. She was supposed to be relieved that I
