Bobby
BOBBY STARED at the math book on his desk, then made a face and stuck his tongue out at it. Math is boring,
he thought. Boring, boring, boring!
He sighed and picked up his pencil, chewing on the end of it as he worked his way through the math problems on the page.
His mind drifted to Carly and how strange she'd been acting for the past few days. Ever since she wanted to play pirates and they wouldn't let her, she'd stopped asking to play. It was like she wanted to be alone all the time, and for Carly that was weird. He would never tell his friends this, but he sorta missed having her follow them around.
Bobby raised his head as a sudden breeze ruffled his math papers. He reached the door just in time to see Carly move stealthily through the hallway and quietly open the front door.
That's odd,
Bobby thought. What is she up to?
Bobby regarded his unfinished homework for a minute, then decided it could wait. Figuring out why Carly was sneaking out of the house seemed much more interesting. He closed the open textbook, slipped on his shoes, and followed Carly into the front yard.
Bobby hid behind a bush and watched Carly dash across the yard and clamber down the rocks to the beach. His heart raced for a moment as she looked back at the house, but apparently the bush hid him, because she didn't pause. Carly turned back around and ran across the beach, where Bobby lost sight of her behind some rocks.
1He carefully crossed the yard and dropped to his stomach to peer down at the beach. His eyes scanned the warm sand and blue sky. He could see the sand. He could see the ocean. He could see the cove of boulders that cut off their house from the rest of the beach. What he couldn't see was Carly.
