    Haunted Carly - Kathi Walker

Let’s Go To A Haunted House

Carly and her friend Amy strolled down the street. Neither girl was in a hurry to get home from school. The October air felt a little cool on their cheeks, but the sun still shone down on their heads, warming their hair and arms.

Nearly every house on the street sported Halloween decorations. The girls walked by scary pumpkins, grinning skeletons, cackling witches, and flying ghosts. Leaves crunched underfoot.

I swear, Carly, you get weirder every day, Amy huffed. You can go in and chat with the ghosts if you want. I’m going home to talk to my real mom and my real sister.

Amy threw Carly a disgusted look, turned the corner, and marched down the sidewalk toward home.

Carly stood in front of the old house and watched an upstairs shutter flap in the wind. A cloud moved over the sun, casting the street into shadow. Suddenly the house seemed a lot scarier than it had just a minute ago.

Carly turned and walked thoughtfully down the street. She started walking faster and faster,
