One: The Creature and the Cat

We were all sitting in the tiny cottage while Julia put the finishing touches on dinner. Katie and Abby looked pretty upset. So did Persie, but only because the cat was tired of her pulling its tail and had climbed out of reach on top of a bookshelf. Persie was trying to climb up the bookshelf as well, but she was only succeeding in pulling books down on her head.

Come on, Daddy, Abby pleaded. Creech has to come with us.

Richard shook his head. Absolutely not. Out of the question.

But Dad, Katie responded, you promised. You got the treasure and we got the creature. We made a deal.

Correct, Richard agreed, looking over at me. I had arranged myself as well as I could on one of the little kitchen chairs. My scaly knees stuck out at crazy angles and my giant webbed hands were spread out on the table, but Julia didn’t mind because she’d already put down towels to keep me from dripping on everything. She and Richard had both lightened up a bit since I’d given them all my pirate treasure. If you’re not familiar with that story, you should read Creech and this will all make a lot more sense.

We do have a deal, Richard continued, and Creech will be here when we return.

Katie and Abby huffed and looked to their mother.

Sorry girls, Julia said, your father is right. A look of mild surprise came over her, as though she had never said those particular words before. There is no way we can take Creech with us. It just won’t work.

Precisely, Richard agreed. He can stay here and look after the cat.

I suppose I should mention the cat here. She showed up one day and started acting like she owned the place. The girls were of course immediately in love. Richard, on the other hand, was less than thrilled when he came in from a painting session down by the pond and discovered the new addition.

A cat and a creature? he protested. Katie was attempting to tie a red bonnet on the cat’s head while Abby tried quite unsuccessfully to get a little basket of flowers over one of its paws. I should think one pet is enough.

Creech isn’t a pet! Abby argued. He’s part of the family.

Yes, Richard muttered, a rather large part.

And you know how you enjoy painting him, Katie said, gesturing at Richard’s latest canvas. It was a portrait of me reclining in an armchair. I was smoking a pipe and reading some book called The Origin of Species by a guy named Darwin. My greatest work, Richard had beamed as he put the final touches on my top hat. My magnum opus. I don’t know what that means, but he seemed pretty pleased with himself. At the time, I’d blubbed out something about not being able to read very well, but Richard said that wasn’t the point.

All well-rounded children have a pet, Katie said. That’s what Grandma says.

She says a lot of things, Richard responded. She says you’ll get warts on your hand if a frog pees on you.

Gross! Abby shouted. They had given up on the bonnet and flowers and were trying to fit the cat into one of their doll’s dresses. Who is letting frogs pee on them?

Julia sighed. Oh Richard, just let them keep the cat. At least then we won’t have any mice running around.

    Yay! the girls shouted.

But you have to care for it, Julia said, and feed it, and give it a name.

Abby nodded once and said, Pocapontas.

    What? Katie asked.

Pocapontas, Abby repeated. That is her name.

We have to agree on the name. And you do know that it’s Pocahontas, right?

No. It’s Pocapontas. I watched a movie about it at Grandma’s.

I was there, Katie said. I watched it with you. It was Pocahontas.

I didn’t know what they were going on about (I usually
