LAST CALL AT THE TRUMP HOTEL
December 2020
The Trump International Hotel's atrium lounge had become the social heart of Washington, or at least Donald Trump's Sodom and Gomorrah version of it. Since Election Day, there had been a strong odor of abandonment. The coronavirus damaged the business first, and then the hotelier finished the job. There is a level of comfort at the hotel,
Giuliani remarked. In an otherwise menacing city, the magnificent mezzanine provided them with a comparatively safe haven.
Don Jr. and Eric would be nursing drinks, sporting their stiff Trump smiles and swollen, angular cheeks. Graham claims that he wanted to be relevant, and that his obsession with Trump made him relevant.
Greene inquires, How badly did you want to get into the clubhouse, regardless of how filthy it grew inside?
But what if Trump had smashed all the typical assumptions into oblivion while also pinning Republicans to the ground? He was still ranting like a lunatic about missing ballots, vote fraud, and voting machines.
Ghitis claims that things were progressing toward something not very nice,
as Trump may put it. Donald Trump was held up as a litmus test for a party that stood by as he mocked military heroes and disabled reporters. But the term humoring
was too passive to describe what Republicans had been doing long before Trump arrived. Bob Greene: Trump has long viewed himself as a disruptor with the mandate to shake things up.
Greene: Like most people, I assumed his campaign would be a whoopee cushion detonated in Washington's elegant Kabuki theater.
Frida Ghitis: Donald Trump was a mirror to the political world he was immersed in. She compares the Republican Party to a political counterpart of Stanley Milgram's obedience experiment. It was usually justification first, then submission, and finally full surrender. The Trump Hotel in Washington served as a hub for the self-dealing, self-promotional suckups who exploited Donald Trump's Washington swamp. Michael Wolraich wished to document their descents into slavery as they struck deals and swallowed their pride.
If you were a Trump supporter, you could court favor with him while enjoying his class and elegance. In the gilded sanctum, criminals such as Roger Stone, Michael Flynn, and Dinesh D'Souza became royalty. Do you want to take a picture with Sarah Huckabee Sanders? Dinner time was your best chance. McCarthy was a diamond-level ass-kisser when it mattered.
Trump referred to his favorite Republican buddy as my Kevin,
a sign of possession as well as fondness. McCarthy arranged for an unique Starbursts gift jar to be delivered to the White House. When Donald Trump was on the throne,
