The Trump International Hotel's atrium lounge had become the social heart of Washington, or at least Donald Trump's Sodom and Gomorrah version of it. Since Election Day, there had been a strong odor of abandonment. The coronavirus damaged the business first, and then the hotelier finished the job. There is a level of comfort at the hotel, Giuliani remarked. In an otherwise menacing city, the magnificent mezzanine provided them with a comparatively safe haven.

Don Jr. and Eric would be nursing drinks, sporting their stiff Trump smiles and swollen, angular cheeks. Graham claims that he wanted to be relevant, and that his obsession with Trump made him relevant. McCarthy was a diamond-level ass-kisser when it mattered.

Trump referred to his favorite Republican buddy as my Kevin, a sign of possession as well as fondness. McCarthy arranged for an unique Starbursts gift jar to be delivered to the White House. When Donald Trump was on the throne,
