Valery Frazier Kelley
I, Valery Joy Frazier Kelley, was born August 19, 1959 to John Delaney Frazier and Anna Bell Carter Frazier. My love for writing poetry began at the age of 12. My first poem was entitled "Love". Publishing a book of poetry has been my dream and ultimate goal for many years. I am so grateful to the people in my life who trusted and had faith in me to accomplish this goal. I am most humbled to God for giving me the inspiration to write on various subjects and speak for others through my writings. I attended Craven County public schools and earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in English Literature and Speech Communications from Fayetteville State University In 1981. While attending, I served as literary Editor of The Voice. I am a retiree of the Federal Government after serving 35 years and am currently a substitute teacher in the Craven County school system. Every year I'd say that this is the year I am publishing my book. Finally, here it is ! It is my prayer that God would allow me to see this publication to the end. It is my desire that my supportive husband, James and children, Ja'Va Paris Kelley and James Christopher Kelley Jr witness my works.James and I reside in Havelock, N.C. Also, it's a blessing that my Mom and my siblings: Barry, Deborah, Shirley, Alan and Ricky can share in my joy. Others who gave great inspiration and support were my grandmother, the late Nettie Morris Carter and stepfather, Onsalee Frazier. My motto is "Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you" and other joys include church & community outreach, singing and word games. My family, friends and Zionites of the Harlowe Community and abroad know the meaning of "over the creek" from whence I come! I have resided on both sides and thought it fitting to name this book. I have been compared to many authors, but simply desire that my poems are heartfelt. To all of the above to include aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews who have supported me through the years, I dedicate this book.

Over the Creek - Valery Frazier Kelley
My Husband
To: James C. Kelley
It’s good to know you have support
And someone’s by your side…
And that when a need is solved
It’s done so with such pride…
It’s good to know you have a shoulder
To laugh or cry upon…
And that business will continue
When your life on earth is done…
It’s good to know you have a savior
And the one you love serves God too…
And that prayer is always in order
You’ve offered it our whole relationship through…
It’s good to know that I can count on you
To answer when I call…
I’m grateful for all you do and have done
The big things and the small...
To My Daughter, Ja’Va
With love: Mommy
Since our hearts first met
Life hasn’t been the same . . .
The waking up at early morning
The deciding upon your name . . .
I long to see your smile
And love to hear your voice . . .
Having you is such a joy
Not just a matter of choice . . .
I love your little hands
I’m amazingly watching them grow . . .
And all other parts of your body
From your head down to your toes . . .
Your eyes are so beautiful
Your hair’s so softly curled . . .
I embrace you into my life
I welcome you into this world . . .
Daddy’s Girl
To: Ja’Va Paris Kelley
Concerning: Your father, James
When daddy holds you in his arms
He whispers, I love this little girl
No one out there could take your place
In this old sinful world . . .
He can’t stand to hear you cry
He’ll look at me and say . . .
Valery, what’s wrong with her
And I’ll reply, She’ll be okay
. . . .
He’s so thankful to God
And he acknowledges it when he pray . . .
In the morning, noon or night
The beginning and ending our day. . .
He prays to God for protection
To keep your body healthy and strong. . .
And that you’ll learn to ask for forgiveness
As your lifetime journeys on. . .

You’re my little man
I think the world of you. . .
Having a son is such fulfillment
And just watching the things you do. . .
You offer me so much love
You hold me, Oh so tight. . .
For you are my company keeper
In the sleepless, dark of nights. . .
You’re my great supporter
I can just already tell. . .
That you’ll be in my corner
When things aren’t going well. . .
You already make me proud
And I long to see you grow. . .
Always remember that Mommy loves you
Ask me things you’d like to know. . .7

Sister, Keep the faith
To: Deborah Frazier
No matter how difficult things may seem
Keep on trusting in Jesus name
Don’t give up this Christian fight
Hang in there with all your might
Although you have not all you need
Money often short, not cause of greed
Still, keep holding to his hands
Only God sometimes understands
Because you often give so much
And has that perfect final touch
Who could deny you when you call
Though short in stature, your heart is tall
Now when my words shall come to end
I know it’s you I can depend
To always say, that’s just her way
Keep the faith until judgement day

In celebration of your 90th Birthday May 13, 2001
We are all on one accord
Realizing that Just one rose will do
. . .
But, we thank you for your many prayers
And for helping to bring us through. . .
Through some very trying times
When we were sick, you gave advice. . .
And when we got in trouble
You told
