S o this is your new job, Jacki? Katie asked as her best friend showed her around the new salon. However, it was immediately obvious that it was more than just a salon. One wall featured four salon chairs, four stalls for hair styling and other beauty treatments. The other side of the shop looked as if it had come out of a tattoo and piercing parlor. But that was because it had. Jacki’s new salon included tattoos and piercings too. And Jacki was certified to do it all. For the moment she was the only employee, but her boss was looking to eventually expand.

That’s right, Jacki answered. And I want you to be my first customer.

Katie stood there, her hands fidgeting as she held them at waist level, just in front of her. She looked around the space, at the salon chairs and the mirrors, as well as at the wall with tattoo ideas and the jewelry cases, making it clear that this was a business that could do it all.

But then Katie’s eyes fell on her friend. They had been best friends for years, but Jacki had been busy for the past few months, getting her certifications to begin this job, and in that time she had changed a lot. Her hair, once almost jet black and cropped short, was not long and blonde. Her body was improved as well. Katie never would have called her friend fat before, but she was definitely thinner now, able to wear a cropped top that showed off a hint of flat midriff and a small piece of jewelry in her navel.

I guess I could use a trim, Katie said, referencing her chestnut hair that barely fell down to her shoulders. She had always preferred a short hair style, not wanting it to get in the way. Not that she ever did anything that made long hair a problem. She worked an office job, sitting in a cubicle all day.

Great, Jacki exclaimed. Now let’s get you in the chair and I can get started. Don’t worry, you never have to pay with me.
