#1 The downtown area around the Los Angeles Greyhound Bus Terminal is a dangerous place after dark. Colorful legions of thieves, muggers, crackheads, alcoholics, and ten-dollar whores prowl like hungry sharks around a bleeding man.

#2 He was a burglar, and he was good at his profession. He knew how to get into any type of home, even one with an alarm system. He couldn’t find a situation that would allow him to exploit it, so he returned to the 10 Freeway and drove to Glassel Park, a low-income community inhabited by workers.

#3 He broke into the apartment of 79-year-old Jennie Vincow. She had two sons: Jack, who lived in apartment 9, upstairs, and Manny, who resided in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. He found a suitcase at the foot of the bed, and when he opened it, he found only wrinkled clothing. He took out a razor-sharp six-inch hunting knife and stood there, his heart beating rapidly.

#4 On August 11, 1964, Jack Vincow went to visit his mother, who was recovering from the murder. He noticed the window screen was missing, and when he entered the apartment, he saw it sitting in the middle of the living room floor. The house had been ransacked.

    #1

The downtown area around the Los Angeles Greyhound Bus Terminal is a dangerous place after dark. Colorful legions of thieves, muggers, crackheads, alcoholics, and ten-dollar whores prowl like hungry sharks around a bleeding man.

    #2

He was a burglar, and he was good at his profession. He knew how to get into any type of home, even one with an alarm system. He couldn’t find a situation that would allow him to exploit it, so he returned to the 10 Freeway and drove to Glassel Park, a low-income community inhabited by workers.

    #3

He broke into the apartment of 79-year-old Jennie Vincow.

    #4

On August 11, 1964, Jack Vincow went to visit his mother, who was recovering from the murder. He noticed the window screen was missing, and when he entered the apartment, he saw it sitting in the middle of the living room floor. The house had been ransacked.

    #5

The first police officer to arrive at the scene was Lieutenant Buster Altizer. He’d been the watch commander at the LAPD Northeast Station on North San Fernando Road when the call had come in over the radio. He smelled the murder and knew what it meant.

    #6

The detectives took note of the dresser in the room, with its drawers open and things strewn all over. They moved closer and studied Jennie Vincow’s wounds. Her liver temperature was 94 degrees, and the room temperature was 81 degrees, tentatively indicating she had been dead between eight and ten hours.

    #7

The LAPD fingerprint experts returned and sprayed the bathroom with ninhydrin, but they were unable to find any additional prints. At 11 A. M. an autopsy was done on Jennie Vincow by Dr. Joseph Cogan. He took note of the unusual wound to her neck: it was actually two deep stab wounds, one on either side of the windpipe, connected by a very deep slash.

    #8

The killer was a loner who was very untrusting of people. He would sneak into people’s homes and take anything he could sell, fence, and quickly turn into currency. He had no friends.

    #9

On March 17, 1985, the killer bought a. 22 caliber revolver from a skinny pockmarked Mexican who hung out at the terminal. He knew that a. 22 caliber bullet at close range is lethal.

    #10

The killer was wearing all black, with a dark blue AC/DC baseball cap. He had a Walkman on and listened to AC/DC’s Highway to Hell album over and over, its hard-driving rhythms pumping him up with malicious intent.

    #11

The killer followed Dayle as she went up the stairs of her house, and when he heard the gunshot, he assumed she had been killed. But when he turned around and saw petite Veronica Yu exit the freeway at Monterey Park, he decided to follow her.

    #12

The man in the Toyota was eventually caught, and when Veronica realized he was trailing her, she began looking for a police car. She pulled over to the curb and stopped her car to get a better look at him. He got out of the car and tried to pull her out of the window. She began to scream. He couldn’t get her out of the window, so he opened the passenger door and dragged her into the car.

    #13

The police arrived at the condominium and saw a dying Dayle Okazaki lying on the kitchen floor. They turned her over, and for the first time, the deputies and Maria saw the bullet hole in Dayle’s forehead. The paramedics tried to resuscitate her, but she was dead on arrival.

    #14

The police arrested the Duenas brothers, and took them to the Monterey Park police station. They gave statements to Det. Tony Romero.
