    Insights from Chapter 1

    #1

I was called to assist the Boulder Police Department with the investigation of the Ramsey murder. I had been away from the police department for over three years, after seventeen years of service, to take the police chief’s position in Telluride, Colorado.

    #2

I was a moderately advanced intermediate skier, and the black diamond moguls tended to kick my tail. I spent the day of surveillance on the slopes with officer Norman Squier. I had handled my first lead in the case.

The following series of events is proposed as a new theory of the crime: John Ramsey was a millionaire executive whose company conducted business overseas and had offices in Amsterdam and Mexico City. The company had topped the billion dollar mark not long before the Christmas holidays in 1996. The family attended a handful of holiday parties while planning a second Christmas in Michigan.

    #4

The kidnappers quietly moved through the house, stopping at the second floor landing to check the hallway outside John and Patsy’s bedroom. The couple was sleeping, and the female stun gunner subdued JonBenét with a piece of duct tape over her mouth.

    #5

The best laid plans of kidnappers often go awry, and that was the case with the Ramsey family when they tried to ransom their daughter, JonBenét. She was not to be fooled by them, and she made a run for the back hallway when she was scratched.

    #6

The suspect tried to understand his feelings, but he felt nothing. He scanned the room and noticed a set of window screens along one wall and a couple of wrapped Christmas presents against another. He took one last look around and left the room, carefully latching the door behind him.

    #7

Monster heard the sounds of an awakening family above him. He waited until morning, when a third person came through the basement calling out JonBenét’s name as he looked around. It was not a police officer, but a detective. He spent some time inspecting the area around the Train Room window well.

    #8

The police radio crackled, and the team in the vehicle behind the Ramseys heard Monster’s predicament. It was decided that no ransom call would be made and perhaps that would give Ramsey enough of a reason to leave the den.
