#1 Jones was sent to cover the Yogurt Shop murders, in which two people were already dead. He was to find the killers, and the shirts they left behind would be hung up at police headquarters as evidence.
#2 The Yogurt Shop Murders were the first homicide investigation for Sgt. John W. Jones, who arrived at the scene shortly after midnight. He pulled in. The steel doors to the yogurt shop were open. The bodies were still smoldering.
#3 The Yogurt Shop murders have never been solved, and they are still a part of Austin’s history today.
#4 I had decided to write about the Yogurt Shop case, which had captured my attention because it seemed so perfect: four bad guys for four good girls. But some people thought the equation was too perfect, and the story kept jumping back to reset.

I had decided to write about the Yogurt Shop case, which had captured my attention because it seemed so perfect: four bad guys for four good girls. But some people thought the equation was too perfect, and the story kept jumping back to reset.
#5
The courtroom where the trial was held was not intimidating at all. It was just a room with fluorescent lighting and ordinary soundproofing. The judge, Mike Lynch, was a small man with a glittering blue eyes who made use of his accent to gain advantage over his opponents.
#6
The lead defense attorney, Joe James Jim Sawyer, addressed the judge. He was in court to ask that his client be released from jail pending a trial. He read a scientific report that stated the DNA test results were not conclusive. The prosecutor said they were continuing to do their own testing.
#7
The press, the families of the victims, and the city of Austin geared up to suffer through a rehash of the case. The Travis County DA, Rosemary Lehmberg, would have to come up with a new case to present.
#8
The Herb Clutter family was murdered in their wheat-field home in western Kansas, and the local response was, These things don’t happen here. The murder of the four girls was different, as the predators came from out of nowhere and seemed to be from the winds of El Niño.
#9
We are all attracted to dark things. We criticize the media for its overwrought coverage of such events, but we watch, read, and reread because we are relieved it’s not us. We want to know why these things happen and what we should do next.
#10
On December 6, the girls were found dead. They were quickly merged into one group, as if they were alike or even the same, and were referred to as angels. Nothing else matters.
#11
Barbara Harbison, the mother of the girls, had met Frank Suraci, a technician at Dell Computers, in 1980. She had married him in 1980. She was a woman of impromptu choices, and she dove full force into the relationship. To enable them to exchange marriage vows in church, she and her daughters
