First and foremost, to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ who is the head of my life, and for making it all possible. Secondly, to my beloved mother, father, siblings, relatives, and friends, living or dead. Lastly, to all of the many men and women who are either doing time or have done time, or have come to terms with their wrongs. It is to all of you that I affectionately dedicate this book to each and every one of you.
Foreword
This book has been constructed from a penological perspective, and because of this, it has been prepared with much patience and diligence. Its goal is to try and discourage others from making the same regrettable mistakes as so many of us have made, which led to us serving time as a result of those choices. It has been said that A wise man will learn from other people mistakes, whereas a fool would fail to learn from his own mistakes.
However, our past mistakes are good at times; they are how we learn, grow, and give us the experience we need in life because it is our past that enable us to draw from our good and bad
experiences when ministering to others. My purpose for such a book is to try and influence others to think before they act as to the long-term effect that any immoral action may cause further down the road. And my thanks go out to each of the men (who wish to remain anonymous) but yet have shared their stories for this purpose in part 1 of the book.
Proverbs 28:13 says, He who covers his sins will not prosper. But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.
As a contribution to humanity, we hope that by sharing these stories, that they will help to open the eyes of mainly the youths of society today who are being constantly sent here to fill these prisons. So many of which that I begin to feel a sense of obligation. There are more and more youths that are as young as fifteen years old who are ignorant of the consequences of certain crimes and the severe sentence that can be imposed for being committed, such as armed robbery, aggravated assault, etc., which in some states such as Georgia can carry up to a minimum sentence of ten years to life. Becoming convicted of such can leave a young man/woman with a criminal record while losing their youth and ultimately have a negative impact on their future. And it is not our wish to just sit here in prison and let our fate become their fate! Because one of the most profound influences that our children's face in life is the pressure to concur with other youths even when they suspect that their decision to do so is wrong.
With at least 70 percent of the US prison population consisting of young men ranging from the ages of nineteen to twenty-five; therefore, this book serves as a reminder to the illegal activities that lead anyone to prison. And it is my hope and prayer that its message speaks to all readers, young and old alike, because every experience, however bitter, has its lesson. And as mentioned above, the enemy here is ignorance, and therefore, it is essential that we succeed in our effort to convey the value of one's freedom. We shouldn't be so quick to judge others when we've all made mistakes. And indeed, a simple mistake can turn into a tragedy at any given moment. But rather, let's allow the mistakes of others no matter how big or small become life lessons to us all. For as you will find in John 10:10, I'm convinced that Jesus can provide salvation, forgiveness, and abundant life to even those of us whom Satan has managed to lead astray. For if God is for us, then who can be against us?
"A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them!" (John C. Maxwell).
Each individual's name has been changed from their birth names throughout this book in an attempt to protect their true identities (with the exception of those deemed necessary).
Part 1
Crimes and Their Consequences
My name is Augie; the crime that lead to my imprisonment occurred in 2002. Being high on crack since the earlier part of the day and having spent what little money I had to obtain the drug. By nightfall, I found myself strolling along the metro streets of Atlanta, Georgia, flat broke yet craving drugs. I've never done anything like what I had begun to contemplate in that moment. And why I chose to listen to the thoughts that entered my mind that night to this day is still a mystery to me. I mean, I had been using crack at the time for a few years and had experienced cravings before, but never had I dreamed that my desire to use the drug would someday influence me to commit a crime. You see, I had entered a Hard Rock Café one night, which were mostly occupied by whites who seemed to drink more and, as a result, becoming more wasted opposed to the other races making them a far easier target for what I had in mind.
However, the very next thing that I knew, I was awaiting a victim in a nearby ally at around 11:30 p.m. When shortly after, a Caucasian male, who appeared to be staggering, was making his way toward the alleyway in which I awaited. As he continued to draw near me, my adrenaline began to race. It somehow seemed to fuse my courage even though I was extremely nervous. But as he neared me unaware of my presence, I leaped from the shadows unexpectedly, drawing him into the semidarkness where I awaited. With knife in hand, I said to him, I don't want to hurt you. So just give over your money and you won't get hurt!
Pulling his wallet from his pocket, I then conducted a swift search of the remaining ones, and finding no funds in them, I shoved him aside and fled. Swiftly I had covered about two blocks, when, wouldn't you know it, A police car pulled across my path as I crossed the street. The cop hastily exited his vehicle with weapon drawn, demanding that I cease all movement. I was arrested.
And after spending nearly six months in confinement, I learned through my state-appointed attorney (lawyer retained by the state) that there had only been $20 in the wallet that I've taken, but never got to spend! The police had driven upon me within moments of my having committed this immoral act that I never got the chance to even search the wallet to see how much may have been inside of it, or even to get rid of it. I received a maximum sentence of twenty years, with ten of which to be served in prison with the remainder to be served on probation following my release from prison for the offense of armed robbery.
I received a year, nevertheless, for each dollar that I had taken but never got to spend and have been incarcerated for nearly six years with a discharge date set for 2022.
It's mandated in the state of Georgia, however, that all violent offenses must sever 65 to 95 percent of their sentence before even being eligible for parole. But nevertheless, I have put someone's life in danger, and it was wrong, and by sharing my misdeeds, I am looking for neither sympathy nor pity, but rather to remind anyone that one mistake can sometimes carry a very severe penalty! A price that in the end you wouldn't want to pay! And if I may end my admission on a positive note, then it would be to advise everyone that drugs hinder ambitions and ultimately destroys dreams! So I would like to caution you that you should never think that you are an exception if ever tempted or pressured to experience with drugs. Or to become involved with them in any way!
*****
My name is Kevin, and the story that lead to my incarceration occurred in 2004. It involved a woman who the victim and I were both having an affair with. I first came in contact with Sandra in a nightclub during the winter of 2003, and we became acquainted. Sandra informed me that she was involved with someone, but that maybe, we could still get to know one another. I accepted, and we exchanged numbers.
Over the next few months, Sandra and I had become very intimately involved, going out to dinner, movies, and having sex regularly. It had gotten to the point that I have begun to ask her to break it off with James, who was already in her life upon my meeting her, and to move into my place with me. I informed her that she had captured my heart, and as a result, I wanted her in my life completely. Sandra agreed that she would inform James that she was seeing someone else and no longer wished to continue the relationship, but on the day that she had done so, James, who, being in rage, threatened that she would regret her decision to ever leave him for another man. However, it wasn't long after the threat that, as anticipated, Sandra moved into my place. And having learned of the threat, I armed myself for Sandra's protection, though I wished that it wouldn't have resulted to this. My very first encounter with James, however, occurred at my home. I informed him as humbly as possible that his presence wasn't welcomed and to vacate the property and never return. But not until uttering threats and words of profanity did James enter his
