Chapter 1:

My grandfather had told me that I had 'Fae Blood.' I never really believed anything he said about it though. He claimed that our family (on his side) came from magical beings that could create fields of energy. But he never displayed an inclination for being able to do anything of the sort. He was very-much into paranormal and occult things and said that 'there was a paranormal community behind the Veil.' Whatever that meant. I figured he was making it all up and this was all some fantasy of wishful thinking. In the time that he was around, I never saw anything magical or met anyone that seemed 'otherworldly.'

As far as I was concerned, my grandfather—kind and good-natured as he was, simply lived in his own world of make-believe. I never bought into it, but I also didn't hold it against him or make fun of him for it, even if my dad tended to keep a safe distance from him.

One day, I received a parcel in the mail. It was something addressed to my grandfather (who had passed away two years ago at this point.) But his mail was forwarded to my apartment, should he receive anything. This was something dictated in my grandfather's will and I'd received some various letters in the past, mostly from colleagues of his who were located in different parts of the world. I perused through them a little, but these letters were pretty ordinary correspondence between old men who fancied themselves as 'members of the occult and paranormal community,' while lacking any proof of such.

But this package was the first I'd received of anything substantial that was meant for him. I was obviously a bit curious about it, so I opened it up. Inside, I found a small wooden box and inside, there was a metallic ring that looked like it was made of silver. It was old and had some markings on it, but nothing that seemed like words.
