SUMMARY OF TEXTS BY PIERRE VILAR[1]
INTRODUCTION
We propose to take a tour of some selected texts by the French historian Pierre Vilar.
We will analyze some of the key texts of this author, namely:
• INITIATION TO THE HISTORICAL VOCABULARY, selection
• The transition from feudalism to capitalism
INITIATION TO THE HISTORICAL VOCABULARY
STRUCTURE AND HISTORY
A) Structure and long life
BRAUDEL defines STRUCTURE as an organization, a relationship between realities and social masses. To this it should be added that this reality, which includes geographical settings, biological realities, productivity, the spiritual and mental, wears out over time.
THE DEFINITION OF BRAUDEL IS LIMITED, because it only speaks of the reduction in space
and the long duration
.
This brings certain DANGERS: a) reducing history to a geographical question, b) thinking that men are prisoners of jails
(the named parts of reality) that prevent them from changing things, disappearing the praxis and innovation of man , c) reduce history to logical questions.
B) Structure and mode of production
The historian must distrust two MODELS: a) UNIVERSAL AND ETERNAL, like that of Malthus, who said that population always increases more than food; here the possibility of man changing reality is discarded, b) THEORIES ARISING FROM A SINGLE CASE, which only serve for that case.
The best definition of MODE OF PRODUCTION has been given by Marx: a structure that expresses a social reality, since it encompasses:
a) The rules that govern the obtaining and distribution of the products,
b) The relationships between men, spontaneous or institutionalized and,
c) The theoretical or religious justifications of that reality, and the organization of the different interests.
Thus, the mode of production is a STRUCTURE WITH DIFFERENT LEVELS (economic, socio-political, spiritual, etc.) INTERDEPENDENT. But it is not a universal scheme, since, in reality, several modes of production coexist, where some develop and others fall into decline. They are historical, not eternal, and speak of the dominant relationships in a society, and not all relationships.
Thus, the mode of production is a STRUCTURE IN OPERATION AND WITH CONTRADICTIONS; These are called crises
on the economic plane, and class struggles
on the social plane. Knowledge of the structure, of the main social relationships, is important, but provided that it is placed in a historical context.
C) From the model to concrete reality: use of the notion of structure in research
The structural schemes used by the historian must be contrasted with reality.
1º Long-lasting structures and mode of production
When studying a specific case, it is necessary to analyze the structure of the country, especially the characteristics that exceed a mode of production in duration, such as physical PERMANENCES
(relief, climate), traditions, spatial distribution of men, communications, etc. . Thus, the great availability of land favored the development of feudalism. However, they are not eternal and absolute factors, since the mode of production itself can change them (as capitalism did with the spatial distribution of men or communications).
Thus, historical analysis implies seeing spatial and temporal changes. The same can be said of the HUMAN REALITIES OF THE LONG DURATION, such as ethnic groups, languages, tribes, etc. Thus, a language, certain practices, folklore, are part
