Tommy parked at the curb outside Ryan’s house. He hadn’t been nervous beforehand, but now he was sweating a little—and not just because it was a hot August morning.

What could be said about his friend, Ryan, that his parents, teachers, and a few academic benefactors hadn’t already expressed? Not much. Besides Ryan graduating high school two years ahead of schedule, he was a born-and-destined MIT rock star who had already received a full scholarship for his four-year ride and grad school, although his first classes weren’t until next spring. Ryan had a new invention he wanted Tommy’s help with. The details had already been texted. Tommy had faith in his friend’s technical skills, but this was technology that didn’t exist anywhere in the world yet. It made him worried as hell.

Tommy strode up to the front door, trying to keep his expectations and emotions blank. As he stepped inside, Simba ran up and pounced into his chest. He barely got his arms underneath to catch the damn cat, who then started eagerly licking the side of his face with that sandpaper-like tongue.

Okay, okay, boy! Tommy laughed. Settle down. It’s nice to see you too. You gotta be careful jumping like that.

Simba’s former body—a golden retriever—sat curled in the corner, smashing a much-too-small cat bed. The sad-looking eyes, with Loki’s mind inside, glared at Tommy.
