Excerpt:

With a bit of a grunt, the zipper rounded the last edge of the suitcase, and at once the whole thing spilled open. The top half launched with such force that it landed upside-down on the other end of the hinges, revealing a great mound of clothing that was twice as high as the suitcase had been when it was shut.

"Holy ..." Lisa breathed, covering her mouth, although the surprise was a lot less than her expectations would have led her to believe. Part of her had anticipated a great pile of cash, but thankfully it was less serious than that. Just clothes, by the look of it.

"What is this?" Brandon asked, fumbling through the mess of fabrics and discovering more garments than he could count. "There's stuff for guys and girls in here. It's like some family's suitcase ... or something."

As Lisa watched on, she realized her boyfriend had a point. At the top of the pile had been a pair of slacks, folded in no particular manner and covered in ugly wrinkles. Underneath that was a lacy white bra with a pair of cups that looked to be sized for a set of watermelons. Brandon held it out and laughed at it, making a comment about the woman who owned the thing, before tossing it out. Below that was more clothing, including socks for both genders, men's briefs and boxers in many different sizes, blouses, shirts in a wide range of colors, tank tops, shorts, miniskirts that were even too risqué by Lisa's standards, underwear and more bras, headbands and caps, wigs, heels and sneakers, dresses and jackets, and one item that made Brandon burst out laughing.

The luggage dropped to the floor as Brandon fell forward, his entire body crashing into the mattress and sinking into the sheets. The whole bed undulated beneath him, starting with a depression where his knees had hit first and moving up along the length of his body, bottom to top. The springs groaned in disapproval, but silenced as they held his weight.

"Oh, he moaned obnoxiously. Five days of ... sleeping my ass off. His hands came up and clamped around the sheets, fingers digging deeply into the fabric. This feels so fucking good."

You going to sleep in all day and not enjoy everything else? Lisa asked, parting the curtains and unveiling the sandy beach that came up to the sliding glass doors. Farther out, blue waves broke near the shore, and seagulls circled out overhead, biding their time for friendly beachgoers to share some treats. Sunlight engulfed the room.

Brandon covered the side of his face oriented towards the sun. "Gah! Not now. I'm going to make sweet love to this pillow. I need some privacy."

Lisa sighed. Her legs still ached from the trek through the airports and from carrying two armfuls of luggage. Five days at a resort didn't require many clothes, but Lisa couldn't decide on what she wanted to wear, so she brought enough to wear different outfits for twenty consecutive days. There were skimpy tank tops and shirts that displayed her belly, jean shorts that covered little more than the average pair of underwear, tight jeans for when she didn't feel so adventurous and open to everyone staring at her, bikinis for the beach, towels, suntan lotion, and a week's worth of lingerie, some of which was practical, and other garments that were meant for the bedroom only. In contrast to her two suitcases, her boyfriend chose the lighter alternative, bringing only an old backpack with the bare minimum of clothing needed to make it through the vacation. She couldn't understand why he was so exhausted.

That airplane food ... and getting up before sunrise ... A yawn fell in between his excuses. I couldn't get any sleep on the plane because of those damn engines. One was like ... right there beside me ... the whole way ... The next things from his mouth were snores.

Lisa thought about waking him right away, but he'd only fall right back to sleep. In all, Brandon had two requirements: sleep and sex. Lisa quite enjoyed the second, but when Brandon decided to snooze, it was best that she didn't intervene. Her boyfriend slept as much as a newborn child, waiting until well after noon to get up on most days, and sometimes he'd take midday naps as well. He was practically asleep for twelve of the twenty-four hours in a day it seemed like. A vacation had not changed this habit.

Though the room was quiet, Lisa could still hear the sound of people rushing in the terminals, calls over the speakers about delays and new arrivals, departures and alerts. There were the young children crying about the idea of getting on an airplane, and the older folks reading books and pronouncing the words out loud. Others wore headphones with music blaring so noisily that it could be heard many seats down the row, and there was the racket of the refreshment cart moving down the aisles, shaking back and forth as the plane encountered turbulence every now and then.

But when she opened the sliding glass doors and listened to the waves crashing against the beach, it all vanished. A moist breeze whipped through her hair, causing it to seem to come alive on her scalp. The same wind blew through her shirt, billowing it out from her chest. Figures in the distance moved in the sand, children with their mothers, men and women holding hands, and she couldn't hear them. Their lips moved, but they didn't produce any sound. It was just the waves and the birds. It was heavenly.

Since the hotel room was going to be occupied for five straight days, Lisa decided to unpack completely, utilizing the dresser that the television sat on. Just like home, she put her intimates in the top drawer and the shorts and pants below that one. The other two remained empty, all except the Bible in the very bottom one, but she left it there without touching it.

Makeup went into the adjacent bathroom, in a little compartment behind the mirror. Towels and other beach accessories were piled on a chair near the bed, and Lisa sat her purse by the bedside table. And when her suitcases were empty, her boyfriend was still asleep, snoring louder than before. His head was turned in such a manner that she could see a puddle of drool
