      The bleak wintry wind whistles around my apartment. The rain beats down against the ground. I look out of the window and see the trails of water the rain has left against the glass. Down on the street puddles ripple with big splashes. The uneven sidewalk collects water in small suburban lakes, waiting for a child to jump in and splatter the surrounding area.

      Occasionally someone runs along holding their hood to their head. They’re soaked through but still they make the futile effort to stay dry, imagining that somehow they can outrun the rain. A lost umbrella skids across the wet road, turning inside out with its twisted metal bent in unnatural angles. It’s as if the world has been sculpted today to reflect my mood, as if I am the sole creator of the weather. The darkness in my soul has bled out into reality and my misery is pouring down on the Earth.
