The Methodology Of "The Capital"
Mandel begins by saying that when Marx wrote "Capital" only A SMALL PART OF HUMANITY LIVED IN CAPITALIST CONDITIONS. The rest of the world was a huge ocean of peasants and artisans.
Mandel affirms that TODAY THIS HAS CHANGED, that capitalist industry and technology have expanded enormously. Also the CONTRADICTIONS BETWEEN CAPITAL AND LABOR HAVE BEEN UNIVERSALIZED. More and more people are wage earners working for fewer and fewer owners.
Mandel mentions the frequent fact that, periodically, "new" theories appear that affirm that "capitalism definitively overcame its crises", that "if there was a crisis before, in the future there will be no more". But despite the various remedies that the bourgeoisie has resorted to (Keynesians, neoliberals), Mandel believes that CAPITALISM IS TENDERING TODAY TO HAVE MORE CRISIS THAN IN THE TIME OF MARX.

THE METHODOLOGY OF THE CAPITAL
Mandel begins by saying that when Marx wrote Capital
only A SMALL PART OF HUMANITY LIVED IN CAPITALIST CONDITIONS.
Mandel mentions the frequent fact that, periodically, new
theories appear that affirm that capitalism definitively overcame its crises
, that if there was a crisis before, in the future there will be no more
. But despite the various remedies that the bourgeoisie has resorted to (Keynesians, neoliberals), Mandel believes that CAPITALISM IS TENDERING TODAY TO HAVE MORE CRISIS THAN IN THE TIME OF MARX.
SYMPTOMS of this are, according to Mandel:
The bankruptcy of the international monetary system after 1972.
Radicalized struggles of European workers after 1968.
Rejection of many of the bourgeois values by the youth.
Ecological crises.
Energy crises.
Recessions.
Mandel affirms that the HEY OF CAPITALISM IS OVER and that, to a certain extent, TODAY'S CAPITALISM LOOKS MORE LIKE THE PURE MODEL THAT APPEARS IN CAPITAL
.
The purpose of Capital
Marx's intention in writing Capital
was to explain THE LAWS OF CAPITALISM (its origin, development and future death). In no way was he interested in discussing supposed economic laws that could be validly applied to any society. Marx thought that the only thing that could be said in this sense are platitudes such as that no society can consume more than it produces without losing its stock of wealth to the point of drastically impoverishing itself.
CAPITAL
DOES NOT DEAL WITH PURE ECONOMY
, because pure economics
is impossible.
On the contrary, Marx affirms the HISTORICITY AND RELATIVITY OF ECONOMIC LAWS. Any economic law is a law for such a society
(be it feudal, slave or bourgeois). This methodological principle bothers the right a lot since it affirms that CAPITALISM, like any other civilization, IS MORTAL.
Mandel explains that CAPITAL
IS NOT EXCLUSIVELY ABOUT CAPITALISM. It is necessary for Marx to account for HOW CAPITALISM EMERGED.
That is why Marx aims to begin Capital
with its CONDITION OF EXISTENCE: SIMPLE PRODUCTION OF COMMODITIES.
Mandel mentions that Marxists
