CHAPTER 1
AMANDA 21 WEEKS PREGNANT
––––––––
Amanda Jackson's husband, Derrick, was out of town on business. She had two movies lined up for the night: a dark drama and a romantic comedy. As she chewed her avocado toast, her phone rang and it was her mother. Amanda had a master's degree in computer science with a specialization in artificial intelligence. When her sister Meredith decided to major in anthropology, Amanda had pointed out that computing was changing the study and practice of every discipline.
That had earned Amanda months of silent treatment and a phone call from their mother. She'd had two ultrasounds and there was no fetal heartbeat and no fetus

CHAPTER 2
PATRICK 6 MONTHS AFTER THE ACCIDENT
He'd promised himself not to look for hints of the old Marissa. He didn't want to draw attention to himself, so he stayed where he was, a failing strategy. Patrick and Marissa walked arm in arm through the halls of residence after their talk with Frederick Peters. I'm trying to decide if a man lacking my raw intellect would follow that business about the knots,
Frederick said. Patrick wanted to stop walking and kiss her, but he feared that would be too much.
Patrick wanted to captivate Marissa, to take her out for a meal. She was on an unofficial sabbatical this semester and rarely left home. Patrick's thesis work, a model of Capgras syndrome, had resulted in his most (only) famous paper. After residency, he'd accepted an assistant professor position in the Department of Neuroscience at Halford. He didn't mention that he had nothing else going on.
Marissa stopped walking and rummaged through her briefcase. I don't need the damping constant,
she said.
