It’s been almost two years since the nation’s darling, Dame Barbara Windsor, died after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, a form of dementia, in April 2014. Her story opened up a conversation about the illness, inspiring others living with dementia to talk about it and encouraging many with early symptoms to get a diagnosis.
According to Alzheimer’s Society, there are around 900,000 people with dementia in the UK, with this number set to rise to 1.6m by 2040, and experts predict that in the next year, 209,600 people will develop symptoms. That’s one every three minutes.
