About this ebook

“What they all know can force change, or the flesh will agonize in pain. Chains are broken when you make up your mind to think higher than the lowness of mind of the people that think they know the real you. Love learning the truth, grow in wisdom and lead the way to freedom for the next generation.”

    PREFACE

    Keep your Head Still

A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man

    keepeth it in till afterwards.

    Proverbs 29:11 (KJV)

T he inspiration to author this book came through the lives of two men that I loved very profoundly. One was my father Willie, and the other was my husband, Jerry. Both were alike in many ways. Both loved to laugh and would give you the shirt off their backs. They grew up in small communities with large families. With limited education, they were self-taught and took care of their homes to the best of their ability. They were strong men who fought hard to just live.

Keep your head still, was one of Jerry’s golf teaching slogans. I heard that statement more than once as he tried to teach, his sons, me and others in the game of golf how to be successful on the course. It was his way to tell us that if we did not control the head the ball would not go the direction that we were trying to guide it on the golf course, into the hole. He would often say that the head controlled the ball when I thought it was the club, and the strength of my arms. To find out later that my mind had to be in the right place to beat the course, and not allow the course to beat me. Golf is a mind game as well as a physical game.

Jerry believes that in order to play like the pros you had to look like the pros. So, he purchased that expensive leather golf bag with his name Jerry Simpson embroidered on the front and then stated to me I am going to get them boys, and many times he did beat them. I guess you could say the bag and the nickers with socks to match may have psyched the boys out for the win. He believed to be the best you had to look like the best and at the right time of conquering your opponent you must keep your mouth shet! and that he did.

I believe Jerry loved the game of golf because it was a place that one could be quite and think of his next move toward that 18th green and the championship. When I have gone out with him, I could see that his mind was working, and with that focused look he would not allow me to say a word. The golf course was a place that was peacefully to him. It was a place that he could be on equal playing ground with anyone who owned a bag. Jerry was once a bag boy at an elite country club, that as a black man, he was not allowed to play on the course. However, years later that changed and he got to play that course with much pride. He was determined to win in the tournament played at Green Valley Golf Course; and he did at a premium price that he was willing to pay. Jerry got them boys in more ways than one. Once again, that poverty mindset was broken because Jerry knew he could and would let nothing keep him back from the win. His mind was in the right place. He knew that he was capable to win and came home with a trophy for his enlarging collection.

What is a person having a poverty mindset? A person of a poverty mindset will typically have the following characteristics. They focus on all their problems in life, and how life just isn’t fair. They dwell on the negative events in their life. They focus on the negative things that they really have no control over. This type of mindset will keep one from meeting the full God ordain plan for their life. God has a plan to prosper you in all things in His will, but you have got to focus on the positives and not the negatives. All things are not meant to destroy you, but sometimes it is part of the process to make you better. There is an invaluable lesson in all things and God knows how much we can bear. Jerry always looked for the good in everybody and everything. He always practiced being better and looking better in every situation. He taught that Best or better mentality to his children because he thought, they
