About this ebook

Are pregnancy exams and hospital birthing classes all that is needed to have a successful birth experience? Do you know what a birth plan is and what it should include? Should you have your baby at the hospital? Should you have your baby at a birthing center? Should you have your baby at home? What are some self care strategies that can help you with pregnancy? What does the Bible have to say about birth? How can you add God's "super" to your "natural" during the birthing process? Birth Right explores the answer to these questions and empowers mothers to make decisions that will help them establish a firm foundation for their birth experiences.

    FOREWORD

    Tammy Born Huizenga D.O.

Even though I am past child-bearing age (way past!), I was interested in reading Cathy’s book. Cathy has thoughtfully and carefully and prayerfully constructed a guide for future parents. I am excited to share her insights with my own children and with my patients.

I believe Cathy’s book has the power to influence and guide many women who are anxious about the myriad of choices and decisions to be made before and during pregnancy. This book is enlightening and clearly defines the importance of planning. Women reading this book will understand how to be proactive while making choices that are Biblically and prayerfully considered.

I first got to know Cathy at a Christmas tea in 2009 when we were both invited by a mutual friend. We quickly realized how much we had in common—we both worked in healthcare and had a special interest in the wellness sector of healthcare. Cathy’s chiropractic practice has continued to grow, and she is well respected by her colleagues and patients. I believe that by reading this book you will see the depth of Cathy’s character and her love for the Lord. I believe every chapter is written with an emphasis on caring for women who may be in a similar situation as she was when she was pregnant. It is clear that she studied Scripture and applied her insights to her own life journey.

Ultimately, Cathy’s goal is to promote better outcomes for moms and babies. I believe husbands and wives will be able to use this book to encourage discussions regarding the miracle of childbirth. I appreciate how Cathy integrates her faith into every aspect of this book. She promotes a faith-over-fear mindset. With prayerful planning and careful study of our options, we can be empowered to take control of how we live our lives. It is clear Cathy’s faith was strengthened as she waited on the Lord. I believe this book will strengthen your faith in God as He reveals His perfect process specifically for childbirth.

We live in a world where a quick computer search can answer nearly every question. Sometimes, however, answers come from a deep and intimate knowledge of God and His Word for you. I believe this book will not only help you decide how you want your pregnancy and delivery to proceed, but I believe this book will also bring you into a closer relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    Lovingly Dedicated To…

God, my Father, Jesus, my Lord and Savior, Holy Spirit,

my Comforter and Advocate, Tim, my husband and love of my life,

Faith and Isaac, my wonderful children (you were worth the wait),

and my friends and patients who trusted me to be

a part of their birthing and healing journeys.

May the Lord reveal His perfect will for your lives and

bless you abundantly on this side of eternity!

    IMPORTANT NOTE TO THE READER

This book is not intended as a substitute for medical advice. Readers should present their petitions regarding their health to the Lord Jesus Christ and then be obedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Readers may find they need the assistance of the medical community, the holistic community, both or neither. Readers are responsible for their own health choices, as well as whom they allow to help with those choices.

    INTRODUCTION

Birthright is an invitation to discover God’s best for your birth experience. Conception, pregnancy, and birth are all supernatural events. The problem is that very few women know how to add God’s super to their natural. In fact, the current mindset responsible for the majority of births may be the norm, but it is not normal, nor how God intends His daughters to experience childbirth.

As a society, we have accepted the false sense of security that the hospital environment offers us. We go to the hospital just in case of an emergency. Our birthing classes get us familiar with the menu of interventions that are available to us when the going gets tough. We place our trust in doctors and technologies rather than following our peace and listening to the Holy Spirit.

Because of this, we are paying too great a price. Too many moms and babies are being injured, or worse yet, losing their lives because of their lack of knowledge.

Birthright takes you on a journey to help renew your mind regarding the birth experience, and gives you the keys of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding to help you experience God’s best (no matter where you choose to birth). Birthright conveys what women can achieve when cooperating with the birthing process rather than trying to schedule or control it.

Even though I am not a midwife, I have witnessed many homebirths as well as hospital births during my 18 years of chiropractic practice. I have also walked my own path of waiting on the Lord for 16 years before having my two children. My daughter was born in a freestanding birth center, and my son was born at home. I hope that my personal and professional knowledge will help build your confidence to trust a more holy model of birthing.

    CHAPTER 1:

AN UNEXPECTED CRASH COURSE IN HOMEBIRTH

    Two days before Christmas, 1997

We are living in Marietta, Georgia. It is two months before my husband and I start the chiropractic program at Life College. Marietta is an entirely new world for me.
