Dedication
This book is dedicated to all those families who are working hard to raise happy, healthy families in tough economic times.
It is also dedicated to those who have gone before us, during the difficult economic times of the past. The men and women who learned how to survive on very little and make something from almost nothing have paved a path for us. We have great role models to follow.
Forward
Thrifty Tips for Families was originally published in 1993 when I was a young mother with three small children. We struggled to make ends meet and I learned to stretch a dollar a long, long way!
Shortly after the original publishing, I was divorced and became a single parent raising three children under the age of 10. I had to work hard to make my money go even further than before so that I could properly care for my family.
In late 1999 I became seriously ill and was unable to work for nearly two years. During this time I ended up living on savings and equity in my home. At the end of my illness I had to sell my home and start over financially once again. Luckily I had the finely tuned money saving skills I had learned over the years to help me.
This book contains the ideas that I used throughout the years as I was raising my children and new information that I've learned since.
Today I am the mother of three grown children. Two are married, and I even have three grandchildren!
Through every stage of life I have learned from so many people about being thrifty. My mom taught me how to stretch a dollar at a young age, as she raised six of us kids. My dad showed me how to pick up odd jobs and earn money for things I wanted.
Whether saving money, earning extra cash or finding bargains in unusual places the ideas in this book can be applied to some degree in anyone’s life.
Today more and more people are finding it necessary to cut back on extras
and even essentials. The news is full of ever rising unemployment numbers and rising gas prices. It is not a time to be timid in your approach to earning, saving and managing money!
Please keep in mind I am NOT a financial planner or advisor – I am just a mom who has ideas to share. Seek other financial guidance from trusted advisors – plan for your financial future and teach your children how to manage their money while they’re young. I am also NOT a medical professional or nutritionist – so please consult your own health care provider for detailed nutrition and/or health related questions as it relates to information in this book.
Throughout this book you’ll also find personal stories that I hope will encourage and inspire you. Being a mother is truly the most important thing I feel I’ve ever done. Now as a grandmother I can honestly say that my family is my greatest joy.
I don’t think back on expensive clothes I didn’t buy....I recall making Halloween costumes out of thrift store finds.
I don’t look back on gourmet meals I missed....I remember my son being so proud of his homemade corn soup that it became our family favorite.
Now as I spend time with my oldest grandson (now three and a half) I thrive on playing with him, reading to him and making him laugh. He is my cooking buddy and loves to make pizza and other goodies with his nana. Memories of times with those you love really are the treasures of life.
As much as my life has changed, so has the world and all the information we now have access to. This new version of Thrifty Tips for Families
has links to dozens of online resources that weren’t available
