    Introduction

    The Power of the Tongue

    William James said, Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does. Permit me to restate this quote as Act as if what you say makes a difference. It does. Taking control of your words makes a big difference in both your life and the lives of others around you.

    Even if you see nothing but darkness around you, speak light. Even if you see nothing but death around you, speak life.

    The tongue can bring death or life;

    Proverbs 18:21a, NLT

    Words can bring about either life or death. What we say about any situation in life determines what happens next within that situation. For example, you may be feeling sick. That feeling is the devil’s invitation. He is enticing you with sickness; indirectly, he is saying Do you want sickness?

    The moment you say I am sick, you accept that offer. However, if you say instead, I am not sick, you reject that offer.

    In our lives, the blessings that we wish for ourselves may not always initially come to pass. For example, you may want to be in good health, but the doctor’s report may show that you are sick instead. You may want to be employed, but the letter through the mail may say UNEMPLOYED. You may want straight As, but your grades may be made up of Cs.

    These negative circumstances may be factual for the moment. However, the ultimate, deciding Truth that shapes your situation is formed from what God says about you – and what you say about yourself.

Although we may find it hard to speak positively at these times, what we say in moments of discouragement matters a lot.

    Our words are powerful. Our tongues can change the situation for better or for worse. Therefore, we must absolutely speak positive words. The benefits of positive words are clear in the Bible. According to
