The Ultimate Guide to Becoming a Successful Soul Professional - Camille L. Miller

    INTRODUCTION

When I committed to doing my first collaborative book project in 2022, I knew it would be a three-book series. I wanted to create a collection of books that entrepreneurs like me gradually needed as they built their soul-aligned businesses.

Our first book, The Ultimate Guide to Creating Your Soul-Aligned Business, was focused on taking the necessary steps to create a business designed around your passion, and how, if created right, it would bring you joy, and recurring income for the rest of your years. Each author contributed an amazing story and a practical strategy from their own journey. The stories all shared a common thread about that a-ha moment when the author knew they wanted to create a business around their passion and the strategy they took to do it. I told my story of a painful divorce and the road to building the Natural Life Business Partnership (NLBP).

This second book is about the journey to becoming a successful Soul Professional. I suspect you’re here because you have created a business but aren’t at the level of success you imagined for yourself and are looking for guidance and stories to inspire you. You’ve picked up the right book! All our authors are experienced soul-aligned entrepreneurs who’ve already created and now run successful businesses. They’ve been where you are now and are eager to share the strategies that brought them success. These stories include mindset challenges, failures, and rags-to-riches stories, and each chapter ends with a tip or strategy the author used to build their next level of success. This book was created to complement the first book in that it’s the next level of work needed to build wealth in your business. So many entrepreneurs create businesses but never grow them to a sustainable level. Whether you’re just starting out, or a few years into business with a stable income, this book is for you if you’re looking to grow to that next level of success, be it six figures, seven figures, or multi-millions. The third book will be on leadership and leaving your legacy. Because as I’ve grown in my role, I realized there is no place to look for mentors and visionary CEOs who have stayed authentic along the way and built wealth with kindness and generosity. The world needs those stories.

As I was recruiting my co-authors for this book, I originally set the criteria to be six figures or higher as a measurement of success; however, after a month of searching for the appropriate co-authors, I realized I was setting the expectation of what success is for me, not you, the reader. I also made the miscalculation that six figures may be the minimum wage for where I live in New Jersey, but elsewhere in the world or even in this country, six figures is not the mark of success. So, I changed the title from Six-Figure Soul Professionals to Successful Soul Professionals. In doing so, I attracted an incredible array of co-authors from all over the world with remarkably diverse backgrounds and expertise. I’m certain you will resonate with a story and find immense value in the shared strategies.

Since starting NLBP in 2016, I’ve wavered along my path on who best to serve. My original intent was to create a professional space to help others build successful businesses from their heart. That hasn’t changed. However, over the years, I strengthened that message and refined who we’re helping. In the very beginning, we were a single-service business organization with an exceptionally low entry fee. We attracted many holistically-based entrepreneurs who were starting out who didn’t want to invest in a long-term business strategy or felt hesitant about raising prices so they could live comfortably. I wanted to be way more than just a place to network. Our early tagline was We’re not just networking. We build businesses. I wanted every member to reach their full financial and spiritual potential, but I quickly learned people had to want to invest in themselves to make that happen. It had nothing to do with what I wanted for them. So, over the years, we evolved into a membership model business and mindset incubator designed to nurture and accelerate the growth of soul-aligned businesses at every stage, from startup to multi-millions.

Running a business is like growing a garden without knowing what seeds you planted. Often the business you start isn’t the one you end up with years later. One reason for this is your own growth. You start a business from where you are in your life at that time. For me, it was because I was searching for a professional organization that gave me credibility and a like-minded community, but it also had to be grounded in science and soul. I couldn’t find it, so I created it.

As I grew my business, I needed different resources, so I created them and added them to our membership. Today we’re a robust business and mindset incubator for successful soul-aligned entrepreneurs all over the world, offering guidance, support, and mentorship. We’ve become a beautiful global community of people who want to improve themselves and build wealth. Members learn from other members what they don’t yet know and instantly learn to excel in other areas through the mentorship model we’ve established. We’re a unique community of creatives because I’m uniquely creative and attract others who are also uniquely creative. At our core, we are creatives who have dreams and just need to brush up on our business skills and confidence. At NLBP, we help you build your personal roadmap to success and embrace the concept that everyone takes a different route to get there.

My goal in writing this second book is to continue to empower people to design the business of their dreams and give access to experienced entrepreneurs who are running successful businesses and have been where you are now. I launched NLBP in early 2016 and went to a no-chapter, fully virtual model on Zoom in January 2018. Yes, we were way ahead of the curve, and I had no idea of the seeds I planted!

By 2021 we rebranded from a small boutique business community to a global professional organization and business incubator. I trademarked the name Soul Professional for our community members and added a scaled membership model to offer distinct levels of support so I could help more people where they were along their business journey.

    Becoming a Soul Professional

In 2022 we opened our free membership level to provide a solid foundation for any entrepreneur aligned with our core values. We freely provide open networking opportunities, monthly masterclasses, and an all-you-can-consume learning academy filled with 100s of hours of classes and discussions from myself and other experienced members to any soul-aligned individual building a business. It’s a wonderful place to connect and collaborate with other like-minded entrepreneurs from around the globe.

For those serious about scaling their business, we offer two levels of paid membership: Soul Connector and Soul Proprietor. The Soul Connector level offers our exclusive Micro-Community Mentorship Program, where our extraordinarily successful and sought-after members mentor others in their proven expertise to help one grow personally and expand professionally. It’s like the Small Business Association, but with unlimited access to experienced entrepreneurs in all areas of business and mindset knowledge; however, we are all running mission-driven businesses. Since coffee meetings are how I began NLBP, I still host a monthly Coffee with Camille to connect with members and inspire new ways of doing business. It’s an incredibly special way to stay connected and share what I continue to learn in my business journey.

Our Soul Proprietor level is currently our highest membership and includes our Six-Figure Soul bi-monthly Mastermind, where soul-aligned founders talk candidly about experiences, celebrate successes, and speak frankly about frustrations. It’s designed to challenge each other while holding each member accountable for creating their own success. Members get instant access to objective feedback and constructive analysis of new ideas. This group enables our Soul-Proprietor members to learn from and advise each other through the sharing of experiences and best practices in a non-competitive and confidential environment. This level also includes our Soul Leader Inner Circle, a think tank for visionary CEOs who have created their own brand and wish to step out of the company’s day-to-day operations. They are making $250K or more, have two or more staff members, and wish to scale beyond $1M more joyfully and abundantly. It’s both mentorship and community at a C-Suite level. Here, I’m both a facilitator and a student.

    How to stay in alignment

The road to success is a little hustle and a lot of mindset work. I strongly believe everyone can reach their desired level of success; however, you must shift your mindset to get there. If your deepest desire is to have a thriving business and live life on your terms, this book supports you and provides all the resources you need to scale your business like never before. You’ll find the stories you’re about to read all share a common thread. After my first book was written, I read through all the chapters before we published it and was amazed at how parallel our experiences were. We all had the same story but told from different vantage points. I think you’ll find the same in this second book. As Tony Robbins says, Success leaves clues.

Take the time to read each chapter and move through the strategies that resonate with you. You have the power and the intellect to get to your chosen level of success. You just need a strategy aligned with who you are and the mindset to get there. I can tell you from experience it’s not a linear path, and not all your days will be easy. I made lots of mistakes and accumulated a good amount of debt along the way. There were mornings I woke up and wondered why I do this, and by the time I went to bed, I felt so fulfilled it wasn’t even a question to give up. Every entrepreneur has those days. You just need to give yourself grace and move forward.

Entrepreneurship is filled with incredible high days and rock-bottom low days. The trick is to keep moving forward. Momentum and the ability to constantly change are what build a successful business. It’s doing the stuff that produces results over and over until it becomes a habit you love. It’s tweaking your ideas until they feel in alignment with your work, and you can keep going.

For me, it’s a slow game. I make decisions slowly. I add things to the business slowly. I remove what does not serve me constantly. However, I do it fast and deliberately when I decide to go in a direction. I also don’t wait to have all the answers and pieces in place before launching. I trust the process and know the answers will come to me. It’s like jumping off a cliff and having faith you’ll build wings on the way down.

We’re all different. We have different talents, skillsets, upbringings, schooling, experiences, knowledge, backgrounds, and cultures. There is no ten-step program that will work for everyone. You need to find your own path and your own way of doing things. You went into entrepreneurship to be your own person. Now be a successful Soul Professional!

    CHAPTER 1

    Embracing Success

How to Play Big and Stay in Alignment

Camille L. Miller, MBA, Ph.D. ABD

    MY StORY

I should just go get a real job.

I can’t even count how many times I thought that while building my business these past few years, and I confess, there are days that old programming still runs through my head.

Entrepreneurship is like a terrifying rollercoaster ride where you embark on top of the world’s tallest building and somehow have to land on your feet at street level. You pour your life savings into this adventure and are given no instructions on how to start the journey or how long the journey will take. You’re excited about the ride and all the possibilities, but you find yourself jumping from seat to seat to see if the view is better. Some days you fall asleep in a cozy position, and others, you’re screaming in the wind as you feel the tracks fall beneath you and you soar down a mountainous slope, not knowing when you’ll level out again. Does this sound familiar? Do you have days where you wonder: why do I do this to myself?

After years of extreme ups and downs, I got off the roller coaster ride and settled for the Tower of Fear—that single fall when I need a good wake-up call. Do you know the feeling? The hardest for me was taking the leap to invest in amplifying our brand. I knew NLBP needed to go big or close. I couldn’t keep up with the work by myself anymore and there were many things that worked when I launched but now were too cumbersome to do manually. I also had an old drag-and-drop website and a logo I created myself. It was obvious things had to automate and become more professional fast. I had grown the business as a one-woman show, but I could no longer sustain the growth with one part-time virtual assistant. The reality was I didn’t have the money to sink into expansion, but if I didn’t invest, we would most certainly implode.

The investment needed would put me in a hole of over $5,000 a month, and this could go on for months. I would lay awake at night for weeks thinking, How will I pay for this? And, What if it doesn’t work? Well, I climbed up that tower of fear, looked down at my options, and took the leap! Yes, I was scared. Yes, I screamed all the way down; however, I leaned in and did it anyway. As the months ticked away and the debt grew larger and larger, there were plenty of nights that fear became sheer terror, and many mornings I’d wake up thinking, Why did I do this? Should I stop the bleeding and just take the hit? What’s my Plan B here? It wasn’t easy. There were many Mondays I would show up at our strategy meetings scared and wanting to pull back. Doubting the efforts were working, but I did eventually reach a place of calmness and trust things would work out as I watched my key indicators move in the right direction. That monthly loss accumulated for over a year before we started to level out. It took a lot longer to see a profit, but I was going for the long game.

Your business doesn’t have to leave you screaming or keep you up at night, but I do know with certainty that growth requires fear. I’m not suggesting you run up debt either. I made a calculated leap and as you grow, you’ll need to do the same to play a bigger game. I still have some sleepless nights, although I have come to a place of trusting the process, trusting my decisions, and knowing in the core of my being that my work is important. It’s a mind-shift change of epic proportions.

A steady stream of forward momentum is what builds the most successful businesses. It’s doing the stuff that consistently produces results over and over and not stopping when things start to pay off. When I decided to grow and took that leap of faith, I created a plan for my growth. Key indicators that had to happen to propel me. I did not attach money to those indicators. I did not say let me get ten more paying members a month to help pay for this. Instead, I set out to show immense value to others and knew if I was consistent with that, all else would fall into place. I started tracking how many people I touched through conversations, podcasts, social media, speaking events, free strategy sessions, free networking, free masterclasses, and our free Facebook group. I started giving without being attached to the outcome and my world opened. On the 10th of each month, I report on how many people we touched, not our debt. Those same key indicators are used to run the business today.

I can tell you from experience, success is not a linear path and entrepreneurship isn’t easy, but it’s worth it if you can get through the worst days. We talk a lot about flow and having an abundance mindset as a soul-aligned entrepreneur, which is important, but it also takes a lot of action plans and strategies to build wealth. I made lots of mistakes along the way and accumulated a good amount of debt in my quest for success. However, I feel so blessed to be able to impact so many people’s lives and be a pioneer for the Soul Professional Movement. I’d love to share with you that that ride gets easier, but it doesn’t. You learn good lessons that you don’t repeat, but there are new lessons that always present themselves. New level, new devil, as the saying goes.

For me, it’s a slow game. I tackle one thing a year that I want to perfect, and all my attention and focus is put on that one thing. Too many entrepreneurs go wide. They add so many programs and services they confuse their clients. If you haven’t read Gary Keller’s book The ONE Thing, I highly recommend it. It was a game changer in my business. It points out that if you focus on just one thing, all other things will be easier or unnecessary. As he says in his book, Getting extraordinary results is all about creating a domino effect in your life.

This past year, I made a crucial mistake by not listening to that advice! I added so many new things to my plate, all at the same time, and all in the launch phase, that my focus was everywhere and nowhere. It was a great learning year, but the lack of focus had dramatic effects on my business. I launched our first book with enormous success, but it took away a lot of my time and attention to my business (this time, I planned it out and started early). I launched our Micro-Community Mentorship Program but without good messaging and a strategy to get it out to members. I hired a speaking coach and crafted a signature talk but didn’t have the time to do the best job I could and found myself writing and memorizing hours before I was to be on stage instead of enjoying the experience. I also got too excited and designed and launched an in-person summit for a community that didn’t ask for it and ultimately didn’t sell. Thankfully, I canceled early but not without financial repercussions. I hired more staff and an innovative marketing team. I also ran business challenges, held a Black Friday Sale, launched two new networking programs, developed our free level program with a free Facebook group, added a TikTok channel, Instagram, YouTube Shorts section, and many more things that consumed my time and attention. I went wide! The one thing I tell people not to do. I learned a great deal about my business and the community; however, it had profound consequences for my business. This year I am committed to ONE thing—building NLBP membership through my key indicator system.

Playing small was another great hurdle for me. For years in my head, I knew I wanted a global professional organization with hundreds of members, however, when I first hired my marketing strategist, she asked me, When you leave the physical world, how many Soul Professionals do you see? And I answered, I don’t know, like 500 hundred? And I said it as a question too. She replied, I’m not working with you! You call me back when you have a better answer. You’re talking about leaving a legacy, and you will only impact 500 people by the time you are 80? I immediately saw her point, but it was too late to change my answer. I was blocking my success. I didn’t believe I could or would make an enormous impact. It was my belief system stopping my success. Deep down, I knew I didn’t want to offend anyone else with my success. Yup, classic impostor syndrome!

It was that night as I lay in bed thinking: How am I impacting the world if when I die, no one is identifying as a Soul Professional? I woke up with one million as my goal and declared it to her. Today my goal is two million, and it might be five million by the time I finish this book! I constantly remind myself: It’s only me and my beliefs about my success holding me back.

Imposter syndrome is what all great entrepreneurs suffer from as they grow and expand, and I am no exception. I used to look at it as a fault, but I shifted that thinking and now look at it as a mark of expansion. As you start to scale your business, you’re going to feel increasingly like: Who am I to have this success? Or: Who am I to charge this much for my work? I often say, I don’t know if it’s sticky floors or glass ceilings, but I’m stuck again. I work on this constantly in our Mindset Mastery Micro-community, where my good friend Meryl is the mentor, and I am the student. It isn’t unusual for me to reach out to her when I’m having a difficult day, either. We all have bad days. Money blocks and feelings of unworthiness sneak up at all levels of success. You don’t get to work on them once, and they go away forever. My advice is to embrace it. Take note when it arrives and quickly get to work. You’ll notice it gets easier, and you recover faster over time.

I believe we all need to build businesses that reflect our highest selves—a business we love each day after we wake up and one that pays us dividends late into our years. When I stepped into my power and started helping others build profitable companies, I started to make a difference and attract the right people into my circle.

You have the power and the intellect to reach your financial potential; you just need a strategy aligned with who you are. You also need to surround yourself with people who are where you want to be and are willing to share best practices and mentor you when things get rough.

I did go through some rough years. Just in case you’re still in those years, and that’s why you picked up this book, I’m sharing my biggest mistakes in hopes that you learn from mine and you keep building your incredible business.

    MISTAKE #1

Hiring people at a high level, i.e., for lots of money, because I didn’t feel I had the knowledge to build my company myself. News Flash! I do have all the knowledge and know-how; I just didn’t believe in myself (imposture syndrome).
