Yogi Bhajan was declared a Master of Kundalini Yoga at the age of 16. He came to the United States in 1969 and openly taught this transformative technology for the next 35 years, until his last breath in Aug 2004. In the turbulent drug culture of the 70s, Yogi Bhajan first reached out to the youth. He recognized that their experimentation with drugs and "altered states of consciousness" expressed a desire to experience themselves and a longing for family, for connection to their soul and their community. In response to this innate longing, he created a family known as 3HO (Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization). Soon, 3HO ashrams began springing up across the United States and throughout the world. He sparked a movement whose tendrils have woven their way into numerous aspects of our culture. Yoga and meditation have gained widespread acceptance in the West and the holistic health movement he introduced through diet, herbs, and lifestyle technologies. Born Harbhajan Singh in what is now Pakistan to a family of healers and community leaders, Yogi Bhajan studied comparative religion and Vedic philosophy in his undergraduate years and received his Masters in Economics with honors from Punjab University. Years later, he earned his Ph.D. in communications psychology from the University of Humanistic Studies in San Francisco. Yogi Bhajan emerged as a religious, community, and business leader with a distinguished reputation as a man of peace, world vision, wisdom, and compassion. He founded several food companies that manufacture and distribute natural products based on these teachings. He fostered economic development in communities around the world. He is also the author of several books on yoga philosophy, business, and communication during his lifetime. The Kundalini Research Institute continues his legacy through The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings, the International Teacher Training in Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan®, and the publications of lectures and kriyas to serve the community of teachers, students, and practitioners around the world. Caliber of Woman - PhD Yogi Bhajan

    1

    June 28, 1992

Normally it looks like religious fanaticism if you praise the founder of your religion. Because we are Sikhs, if we say, Guru Nanak knew this or said this, it looks like we are praising a person or a personality and that may create a conflict with the acknowledgement of the Truth. It was not good for the established religions when Guru Nanak started talking about the reality of God as a religion. What Guru Nanak said was very simple. Before him—and it's not long ago, five hundred and twenty four years ago—the main thing was: know the Truth, find the Truth and if you know the Truth and you can find the Truth, then everything is okay. What he said is: knowing the Truth, finding the Truth and not applying the Truth makes no difference no matter how much Truth you know. It doesn't matter how much you have found the Truth, if you cannot apply the Truth, it doesn't make any sense.

Then he established himself. He said the only way you can apply the Truth is if you know the Truth as practically applied Truth. Then he divided the Truth into three types: individual, geographical circumstances (or acknowledged Truth); and Infinite Truth. When he talked about the Iinfinite Truth, then he decided to say everything is One. It comes from One, and it represents One. That is what you don't want to hear. Even you who follow Nanak are not willing to accept that! Everything is One. One is One. That everything comes from One you are willing to acknowledge. One is One, everything comes from One. But that everything is One. That you cannot acknowledge, because that you cannot accept. You want good. Nanak said, Good and bad are just one. They are two sides of the same coin. And that is where every religion of that time conflicted with him.

Let us say it in the Aquarian language. You have a natal chart in astrology. You have a natal destiny and in scriptures it is called samskaras*. All your previous lives’ karma* put together makes a natal chart. And it's so accurate a science. I am very well aware of it. It can be almost 99% correct, if you know what you are doing. But out of one billion people practicing, one may know. Psychics are great, but they have to interpret. They are not intuitive. They know, but they mess up the interpretation. Numerology is a very exact science, but you cannot take the counter-numerology, so you may mess up sometimes. You may have this situation, then countercheck it and you may find a little difference. So, that's why I study all these sciences. I found it's a very heavy duty thing to know.

Because Infinity creates Infinity and it is very difficult to know. So if you are a part of the Ek Ong Kaar, that's Infinity that created you as Infinity and if you are not Infinity your problem is right there. You can never be happy, period. There's nothing I can do or you can do, because if you are created to be a watermelon you cannot be an orange! Now every watermelon says, I am an orange. Every orange is saying, I am a watermelon. Who can decide it? You are of Infinity. You know it by science, you know it by religion, and you know it by belief! You know it by experience.

All say that you are from Infinity. All acknowledge that you are from Infinity. All actions know Infinity. All those actions that do not represent Infinity by you are cursed actions, are crooked actions, are untruthful actions and their reaction will bring you pain. Nobody gives you pain, you don't have one enemy, none. You have nothing to worry about. Nanak vouched for it, and even says if you get up in the ambrosial hour and meditate on the higher self, then the diagonal energy will protect you enough that you can face the day happily. He's very clear about it. He even explained it scientifically and says it openly. Let's go all the way to the end manifestation of the same light to the Tenth Guru's time, where He lays it down very firmly. He said:

Rehit piaaree mujh ko, sikh piaaraa naahe.

(As spoken to Bhai Desa Singh by Guru Gobind Singh)

The discipline of the Sikh is more dear to me than the Sikh

If you do not have a form of living, your living is no good to us. You got rejected right here. Rehit* qualifies. What is rehit? What is this little kirpan*? This little kanga*? This little kurchera*? This little kara*? What do these give us? We've never explored it. What does this kesh* do to us? We think these are extra fanatic religious things. No! These ‘fanatic’ extra-religious things tell you that you don't exist. They tell you that you do not exist individually. That's what they tell you. Kara tells you, you are a slave. Whatever you write or do with the hand, be careful. It must have God in it. Kurcheras tell you whatever you do, if you don't feel it's God's Will you are doing it for, personally avoid it. Kirpan tells you that you are not impotent. If it comes to defending somebody and you want to lay out your life, the life is not yours anyway. Don't live as a coward. Kesh tells you to identify who you are before everybody. Kanga tells you not only to clean your head physically, clean it all the time. A clean head is a pure head when there's no personal garbage in it. And Guru said,

Rehit piaaree mujh ko, sikh piaaraa naahe.

(As spoken to Bhai Desa Singh by Guru Gobind Singh)

The discipline of the Sikh is more dear to me than the Sikh.

If you do not have a form of living, your living is no good to us. These are kakaars. These are symbols. Like a flag is a kakaar. American flag is a kakaar of America. Without writing, without declaration, where that flag flies, that is American territory. Where these five kakaars are, that body belongs to Guru. And therefore that body is not individual.

It was very funny. Once in my lifetime I was asked to supervise a visitor to India. My officer called me, Sir, we are chasing a nun.

I said, What? No, she's a French woman.

He said, I don't know if she's French or German, but a nun came out of that room.

I said, Go inside the room, is there any other person?

So he called me back, There's one woman who's sick in the house, but the nun is gone.

I said, Chase the nun. We have been ployed. Orders were orders. Nun was chased and when we interrogated her, I asked her, Why did you become a nun?

She said, If I knew that I was under your beat, I would not have done it. Normally nobody would have chased a nun. You did.

I said, You left that sick girl as your subsititute and you dodged us. And you became a nun and you walked out. We would normally not have chased a nun. Circumstances were already perfect, the girl was sick, she came and became sick, so nun came to bless her. It looks very normal. And the nun left. But we knew nuns don't come to a hotel so fast. We came last night and the next day the nun was there.

That's experience. You have to have experience that God is. You have to experience that God is everything. First you have to experience wearing the kakars and then you have to experience everything as Ek Ong Kaar and then you also experience everything as Nirankar. All is nothing, nothing is all. That's what Nirankar means.

And the basic problem which we as humans have is that we are having samskaras. That is why we are born in a longitude and a latitude in a certain town with certain parents with certain wealth, with a certain understanding and certain attitude. It is given to us. But after seven years, our samskaras, because of our conscious experience, change and they become karma. And after eleven years, because of our intelligence watch on our karma, we have to decide if we are dharma* or not. If we are not dharma, the life starting from that day onward is in pain.

In English we have a natal destiny. After seven years it becomes creative destiny. After eleven years it becomes applied destiny. Whosoever does not live in applied destiny cannot be happy with all the sought-out wealth, beauty, health, circumstances and what not. That's what Nanak said, and that's true. It's not only true, that's the living Truth.

He said, If you do not get up in the ambrosial hour, and you do not meditate on Infinity, your day will be nothing but a mess. He said, At two twilight zones, if you do not concentrate on Infinity you have no chance to be happy. He knows it. He knows it and now the biorhythm knows it. Now the science knows it. Now the astrology knows it. Now everybody starts knowing it.

His knowledge was so simple! He said simple things. What Nanak said is a very funny thing. He said, You care for yourself, but you don't care for the One who cares for you.

You care for your environments, you care for your responsibilities, you care for your deadlines, you care for your relationship, you care for everything. You don't care for the One Who cares for you and that's your breath of life! You live in a body in an identity you don't care for. You live in a mind of your own you don't care for. You live in your soul and spirit you don't care for. That's what Nanak said. He said, Knowing Truth is useless if it is not your applied Truth. Well, if there is a son before you and there is a person before you, and if your decision is to favor the son, you have no truth. If your decision is shaded and if you committed a word, right or wrong is not in discussion. If you said so, and you cannot honor it, you have no honor. When two people speak, it is two people and God as the witness. We call it Akashic records. Whatever you say, you live by it. Their's not to reason why, their's but to do and die, into the valley of death rode the six hundred. You said it. You didn't mean it. No, you said it, you mean it. You don't mean it, you are just a mean, mean, mean man. You heard, but you didn't hear it. You said, but you didn't say it. You saw, but you didn't see it.

Somebody once asked me, Yogiji, here's the situation. Show where God is to this person. The lady came from Portugal. Portugal and India have a bad relationship. She had only twenty-four hours to stay in India. She came to the ashram and I was told to give that woman God.

And I said, What kind of God do you want?

She said, An experience. I want to see It. I want to feel It. I want to understand It.

I said, All three in one?

    She said, Yes.

I said, Okay, how much time have you got?

She said, I have to leave tonight. At eleven o'clock my plane leaves.

I said, My dear girl, it is already two. So what do you want?

She said, Well, this man tells me that you can give me God.

I said, All right. One thing I'll do, one you will do.

    She said, What?

I said, Sit down. Look into my eyes. Number two, you will not open your mouth no matter what happens.

She said, Done. So I totally plugged up her nostrils. The only way she could breathe was through her eyes or ears. She could not open her mouth and I would not let her open her nose. In exactly forty-five seconds, she opened her mouth and she said, God!

    I said, You got it!

She said, Yes, yes, yes, I got it!

I said, But don't ever ask to find God, now you got it.

    Will you come to Portugal?

    I said, No.

Can I do anything for you?

    I said, No.

    Why not?

I said, If I can give you God, you don't think I have it? Why would I ask any favor from you? Who are you? Go, go — tonight you have to leave. Now you know God.

If with these eyes you want to see God, you can't. If you see what makes these eyes see, that's God. If you hear, you're not going to hear God. If you see what makes the ear hear, then you know God. If you speak, you're not going to see or affect God, but you must see the Who who makes you speak.

The word is Ek Ong Kaar. You are Kaar! You are creation. You have to find that One. There aren't more. Guru Nanak is very right. There are not two Creators. There's one Creator. You have to go to the Creator.

I know many of you don't like me. I know it. I know this as a fact. You don't like me and it's right that you should not like me because I know your tomorrow. I know, I can hear, I can participate with your sorrow today, but what about the endings which are coming tomorrow! And when I say, Don't do it, you say I'm trying to control you. I'm not trying to control you, I'm getting rid of your problems so my problem may not become heavy. If it's one pound today, I don't want a pound and a quarter tomorrow. It's a selfish trip. I tell you very openly. I have nothing to gain from you, nothing to lose. I just don't want further trouble. Enough is enough. That's all the relationship is. I'm not asking you to give me anything. Give me abuse, fine. When people leave, people get angry, people abuse, people don't listen, where's the light weight? Some load is gone. It's their problem. They'll find God somewhere else. But as long as you are with me, stay cool. I don't want tomorrow heavier than today! I want tomorrow to be light. Not light, light, but just light. That's enough. You should start making every tomorrow lighter than today, then one day it will be totally light. That's the theory I think will work. You avoid me, it's fine with me. You don't like me, it's fine with me.

I have some obligation as well, to not tell you straight. Because if I tell you straight it is a debauchery, it is untruth on my part. Because then I'm not teaching you, I'm telling you. There's a difference between telling you and teaching you. Teaching you is allowed. Telling you is not. Telling you is controlling. Teaching you by telling you, Watch out, that's okay, that's rational, that's permissible. The job is just to let you know that you are you. And if tomorrow is not beautiful, light and wonderful and you are not meditating in the morning, taking care of it, if your sadhana* is not right, your kriyas* are not right, your karma is not okay, your dharma is not in place, tomorrow will be nothing but a sorrow.

You tell me that you have sixty thousand dollars in the bank, you have half a million dollars now, you have better muscles than me, you are younger, you are a native of this land, you can buy yourself out. What I am saying is, tomorrow there will be a sorrow. The pattern will keep on adding sorrow, you will never be out. Then you say I curse you, I'm not cooperative, I'm Indian, I eat flies and monkey brains, therefore I do not understand you Americans. That's what you say. Then finally you get frustrated because I don't change, you take off your turban and you leave. But when you leave me, you worship me more. You more than worship me, you talk about me, you pay more on the telephone and talking than you have ever done when you were with me. So this game is going on, it's a personal game. But there is no truth to it.

I'm not interested in you. I'm not interested to hear your story of yesterday. I'm not interested in talking to you today. All I'm interested in is that your tomorrow is better than today. If it is good, fine. If it is better, it is satisfactory. If it is best, I like it. And if it can be plus best, God bless you. And there is no relationship between us at all. You're doing the same thing you are doing to the Catholic church. Catholic church says, Feel guilty, don't do anything wrong. You don't like it, fine. Protestants said, Protest everything, but feel guilty and keep going. Jews say, Guilt or no guilt, it's all now. Buddha says, Wisdom is the only answer in experience.

Communists came and said, All belong to one state, one mind. They become Ek Ong Kaar more than anything else, but that's not Ek Ong Kaar. Every individual is complete, perfect, and by the Will of the Creator is one unit! It can't be helped. But what you are trying to make religion is, I'm a truck, I'm going to tow your car! So it is two cars. It is not true. That's not the religion of Nanak. It doesn't work that way. If you follow the ego of Nanak, then you have to follow the ego of God! And you have to let your ego go. You want to keep your ego. You want to follow all that you want to follow? You want to appreciate Nanak? You want to appreciate yourself? You don't bring in God. And God you do in the abstract. You know when you use God? When you don't want to listen to anything. When you are totally an egomaniac, then you use the word God.

Somebody was telling me, God is talking within me. Here. My self is talking.

    What is It saying?

    It's saying, I am, I am."

    Then what?

But I do not know how to go to Espanola, I don't have a ride.

I said, Talk to the ‘I am, I am.’ ‘I am, I am’ can produce a thought. And it takes you to Espanola.

She said, No, I am asking you.

I said, I thought: ‘I am, I am.’ I can create a car. You have already learned, ‘I am, I am.’ Now ask your ‘I am, I am,’ ‘Where is the car?’ It's your car.

    No, I have tried everything.

I said, Do you want to go to Espanola?

    Yes.

    You want to come back?

    Yes.

There was a guy walking by. I said, Hey! Come here!

    Yes, Sir.

I said, Do you have a car?

    Yes.

Take this girl down, and bring her back.

Yes, Sir. And there they went.

In the evening she said, Thank you!

I said, What for? Didn't your ‘I am, I am’ learn that it can create a car?

    Well, yours did!

Well, why do you want to understand me?

Well, you are Siri Singh Sahib!

    I said, "That is a treachery! That's a tragedy. That's a betrayal.

Put somebody on a pedestal: ‘That person is higher than me, therefore he can do it.’ That's not the truth. Truth is, what anybody can do, you can do. What Nanak can do, you can do. What Guru Gobind Singh can do, you can do. Everybody can do it." That is where Sikh Dharma differs with everything.

Ek pitaa ekas ke ham baarik, Too meraa gur haa-ee

    (Guru Arjan, p. 611)

We are all One. We are children of the One, and God is our higher self.

There's a difference you must understand between you, what you know, and what you have practiced from your forefathers and what Guru Nanak is saying.

    Guru Nanak is saying:

    Prabh jeeo khusmana kar piaaray

    Bure bhale ham thaare

    (Guru Arjan, p. 631)

Bad and good, we belong to You God

Bad and good, You belong to me.

It's not putting conditions on it. It has no control factor. It says things exactly as they are to be said. And the crux of Sikh Dharma, which is the base fundamental, the touchstone is: Nanak Naam Chardee Kala.

Every religion says, You praise God, you take His name, you live and dwell in God, you be with God, you understand God's word, you'll live in high spirits. Guru Nanak goes one step further. High spirit only means to him, if you are Sarbat daa bhalaa, if you wish, act and deliver the good of all. And I know personally it's a very painful thing. It's impossible to do. But on the other hand, what is impossible? Drop the ‘im’, possible is yours. What is insecurity? Drop the ‘in’, security is yours. What is immoral? Drop the ‘im’, moral is yours.

You are in the world of the Creator as a creation, but not total creation, individual. That Ek which Nanak put before Ong and made it Ek Ong Kaar, is the oldest mantra which the Chinese give to each other. They say, "Ong Karaa." Nobody says Ek Ong Kaar. Nanak said, You are from the One, you are One, and you shall merge in the One. And the funny thing is, even in the numerology, we say one and one make eleven, and it's an unchangeable number.

You claimed a family, then you claimed a village, a tribe and a clan. Then you made a nation. Then you made a country of nations. In Europe ethnic groups are fighting today. And that's the way you want to control the world. So what you do is, you take two hundred fifty million people called Americans, and out of that two hundred fifty million, two hundred fifty rule. And you call it Democracy. Three hundred eighty million or three hundred million were ruled by eight people, and you called that Communism. And watch this: three hundred fifty million lived and were ruled by one person. You called it a Kingdom. Your basic idea is to rule, not to follow the rule. Nanak said, If you follow the rules, all rules will follow you.

You want territory and you want control. And in territory and control you lose your soul! That is what every religion has done, that is what every person is doing. And if this continues, pain will be enough to eat you up. I'm finding difficulty, I don't know what I should do! I'm asking you, when my job is done, I'm going to go, you take over—sincerely. You have gone so anti- of these laws, you think I'm joking. I have to hand over, you have to take over. These Gurdwaras are yours, these Gurus are yours, this God is yours, you are yours.

I just helped you to get the scene together. Now it is your job to get the scene together. Now everybody's job is everybody's. These are creative environments! We cannot lie to each other! That is the dharma, that's spirituality, that's reality, that's the Sikh Dharma, that's the learning way, that's how you live in a learned way. That's the only learning in the world!

I have learned from my yesterday, I am wise today, I'll be courageous tomorrow. Sikh Dharma finishes, the teachings are all set. There's nothing to it. I have learned from my yesterday, I am wise today, I'll face tomorrow with all the courage. It isn't the life that matters, it's the courage you bring to it. If you bring total courage to it, Ang Sang Wahe Guru, God will be with you. If you don't want to face your tomorrow, you may lose. If you want to face it with all the strategy you know, you may win, you may lose. But if you face tomorrow with Wahe Guru, you're not going to lose.

Some people say, My wife is not obedient. Don't ask her to obey anything for a few days, she'll go berserk.

The language of silence is a powerful language, because it's the most most powerful language of God! Nobody hears God. He doesn't speak. It's the language of the knowing. It comes from self-containment, contentment and continuity in the spirit and the cycle of God. It's not 180 degrees, it's 360 degrees.

It's a privilege to be a Sikh. It's a simple religion, a simple reality: "My yesterday has taught me, my today is wisely taking me through. My tomorrow will be all good, happy, healthy, holy because I face it with the courage of Wahe Guru. I was born Wahe Guru. I am Wahe Guru. I'll face tomorrow with Wahe Guru. I am Sat Nam. I was Sat Nam. I shall be Sat Nam. Truth was my identity. Truth I am today in identity. Truth shall be my identity in tomorrow."

Guaranteeing your identity tomorrow is Sat Nam. That's all that Sikh Dharma is, nothing else. That's all that Guru Nanak said, one commandment: Jap! (repeat):

Aad Sach Jugaad Sach, Hai Bhee Sach, Nanak Ho See Bhee Sach.

(Guru Nanak, Japji Sahib, p. 1)

Just ten minutes before I was talking today, a person said, I am the worst of the worst.

I said, Thank you. You made my day.

    Why?

I said, I saw the worst of the worst. And plus a confession with it! And that's another plus. And third is, I'm not agreeing with it. That's another plus.

    Why?

I said, Look, you have confessed that you are the worst of the worst, right? You have known it. Now you are perfect. The only difficulty is to know the difficulty. After that the solution is easy.

Now you know the worst. What should I do?

I said, Be better, and best. Good, better, best are the opposites of the worst. You are worst of the worst, be good of the good, be the best of the best. What is the difference?

    Nobody likes me!

    What's wrong with that?

    Nobody obeys me!

    Wonderful!

    Nobody listens to me!

    Far out! I am free!

It's just like my cherry tree. Nobody plucks my cherries.

Okay, last year you didn't give cherries, nobody knew if you existed or not. Fine! Keep your cherries, eat them yourself!

No, life is a simple formula of Ek Ong Kaar. It's better if you understand what Ek Ong Kaar means. Ek means the One. It's an added word. It doesn't exist in any scripture. It's the One who created the creation. That sounds good, but it's wrong. There's a key to it. One created the creation as One. That you can't accept. Therefore you can't accept Nanak. If One created the creation as One, don't put your finger in it, you will lose your hand. That's what I'm saying. And that's what Nanak said. And don't try to be macho or play the games. Just feel, One created me as One, and I am thankful to the One, and I am One for the time being, and I'll be One tomorrow with the One.

Now just listen to these words. Don't they sound good? Why do you say, I'm sorry, I am rotten, I am bad, I don't like you, I hate you, I love you? Why do you say, I love you? There's nothing wrong in hating and loving, but when you love, you hate, you hate, you love. Just be one. You do not know whether you love or not, whether you hate or not. If you do not know whether you love or not, you'll never know whether you hate or not. What a safety! Don't try to know what is right or wrong, because if you know what is right, what is wrong, you go into the duality.

Palach palach sagalee muee jhootai dhandhai moh.

    (Guru Arjan, p. 133)

Everybody dies suffering from false entanglement in worldly things.

You get into the gimmick of this bad and good, right and wrong, nice and this, love and hate; it's all polarity! We don't need it. I am One. From the One. My purpose is to be One with the One. One knows I am One, and all the Creation is One. Therefore, I am One with all the Creation. All Creation is with the One. That is what Wahe Guru means. Truly I am One. Truly One created One, and One is within One, and One within all aspects of One remains One. In the beginning was the One, now is the One, and in the end will be One. That's one lesson you have to learn. That's what Sat Nam is. What else do we have to learn? There's nothing. There's no ‘Siri Singh Sahib’. There's no ‘Siri’. There's no ‘Singh’. There's no ‘Sahib’. There's just One.

If there's no Siri Singh Sahib, there's no you. If there is a Siri Singh Sahib, you are all Siri Singh Sahib! If there's no Nanak, no Nanak. If there is Nanak, then all is Nanak!

    Nanak neech kahai veechaar.

(Guru Nanak, Japji Sahib, p. 4)

Nanak becomes the lowliest of the lowly, humblest of the humble.

And then he says it. Watch out! This is the end of the pauri* where he starts with thieves. Everywhere else he says,

    Kudrat kavan kahaa veechaar.

(Guru Nanak, Japji Sahib, p. 4)

How powerless am I to tell Thy excellences O Lord.

When he talks about the thieves and the throat-cutters, then he becomes the lowliest of the lowly. Everywhere else he is Kudrat kavan kahaa veechaar. I laugh when I read that pauri. I sometimes laugh so loudly people don't understand why. I don't understand why I crack up. I see him right there. He is funny, because he knows. It's always better to talk to a mean person, by saying, Hey, we are friends. I am the meanest of the mean. Because it's the forklift. You've got to go into the dirt. Pick it up, and put it on the track, so the person can move.

Nobody wants to move on the right path, because when you start moving on the right path, nobody pays attention to you. And you want attention. Every child, when the mother doesn't pay attention to it, messes up the house. And that child in you is never dead.

Somebody was telling me one day, This son of yours is very loyal and useful.

Everything's fine, but he hates me from the core of his guts.

    Why?

He's very divine. Hehates God, he hates me, and he hates himself. But he's a very devoted son of mine.

    Why?

    He hates Infinity.

    Why?

"He has a father phobia. God is a father. I am a father. He is a father."

    What keeps him so loyal?

I said, A good attachment. Because once in awhile, I hit him so hard, he doesn't know where to survive, so that keeps him calm for awhile. This is the game we both play.

That's why he lies to you?

I said, "What else can he do? He hates everything, he hates me, and I hate him, and we hate each other. Normally my hate wins over his hate, as long as it is going on. The day his hate wins over my hate, I'll be dead!"

And that's all so true. All your love is your ingrown hate, which you don't know. All your expressive love is your ingrown insecurity, which you don't want to know! And all your environments is your total nakedness, which you don't want people to see. And that is maya! That's the reflection of the reality of the Infinity of Truth of that of the One. Your talk doesn't walk! You have to walk! And that's what Nanak said.

Amrit velaa sach naao vadhiaaee veechaar

Karmee aavai kaprhaa nadree mokh duaar

(Guru Nanak, Japji Sahib, p. 2)

In the early hours of the morning repeat the True Name and reflect upon the greatness. By our past actions we have been granted this human birth.

He didn't say, "Your karma will become fine." No! He said,

Karmee aavai kaprhaa nadaree mokh duaar.

(Guru Nanak, Japji Sahib, p. 2)

Your karma will be covered with a robe of honor, and the door of salvation will be before you.

And then he said something which you understand.

Naanak evai jaanee-ai sabh aape sachiaar

(Guru Nanak, Japji Sahib, p. 2)

Trust Nanak now knows this way.

    The rest, God does everything!

God is everything, God is negative, God is positive, God is neutral. But Nanak knows this works. That's him talking to his Sikhs. He said, This works. There are a lot of things: negative, positive, neutral, but Nanak says, This works. Naanak evai jaanee-ai. Why does this work? This works by the Will of God, the One God. Every holy spirit leaves the body in the ambrosial hour! That I know. You have to. Otherwise that very day you'll be dead. If your psyche crosses 3.5, it is in the fourth realm,

    Chante padme muktee paavai.

    (Sanskrit saying)

In the fourth realm one finds salvation.

You must leave the body in the ambrosial hour. Otherwise the body will leave you. That's the ball game.

So, in the spirit of life, you have to understand there are laws which you cannot change. There are changes which must be the law. That's how I experience Nanak. I have shared with you the way I look at Nanak, the way I experience Nanak, the way I hear Nanak. It is my sole effort that tomorrow you'll feel the same way for the sake of experience.

If parents will experience it, then their children will experience it. That's the biggest problem that we have now. Parents feel that they don't have to experience. All their experiences are their neuroses and their pain. And children are suffering. Not only have we not become the healers for our children, we have become the destroyers of our children. My way to talk about Nanak was, ‘We can heal if we want to heal.’ We want to heal ourselves first.

I'm not asking you to leave the identity of you, the Oneness of you. Nanak says, One created the One. You as One. So don't worry about it, I'm not taking away your One. You are always very worried, when I say something to you, in counseling or otherwise, you are always afraid you are losing something. Because you do not know how to obey. Obedience is the first law of spirituality. Because when you obey the command, you obey yourself, and you command yourself to obey the command! That's how you become superior! If I say something, and you have to implement that, you have to come through to apply yourself and practically command yourself to produce it. And that's called experience. That's called giaan. That's called knowledge.

But when you are being commanded, and you lose spirit before it, you have lost! You won't have giaan, you won't have experience, you won't have knowledge. You have only two things in life. One is the knowledge, the other is the experience. And if you do not command yourself in obedience to obey the command and command yourself to experience, you have no knowledge! That's what Nanak says, and that's the way it is.

It's my prayer to myself that my One stays with me until that one moment when I say goodbye. Try to stay with the One you are born with, and you are experienced with, and you may apply One to your everything. Apply One to everything! Apply Oneness to your enemies, to your friends, to your calamities, to your destruction, to your construction, apply Oneness to everything! You'll feel great! Your fear will be gone. Your tragedy will melt away. Your sorrow will be gone.

As parents you happen to be students, but I hope you are teachers to your children. You could have taught them the values of Nanak. Today we would not be so badly suffering as we are. You poisoned them, you catered to them, you covered them, and thus you destroyed their will to survive against time and challenge. You took away from them the most innocent power in them to challenge the time. You made them slaves of the time. You taught them to follow the fads, fashions. You didn't teach them to follow the fashion of Nanak.

I told you to follow the path of Nanak. You didn't tell your children. How cruel you are. You got something. Yes, I know, in Gurdwara you put it out and this and that, but you're not very happy with it. You're not happy with yourselves. I don't have to read a book or a dossier on you to find out how happy you are. Your bana* tells me. With what pride you wear it, with what pride you walk with it.

    Aasaa, isht, upaasanaa; khaan, paan, peheraan;

Tusee eh khaat ek ho, taahe mitar pachaan.

    (Sanskrit saying)

One's longing, altar, worship; way of eating, drinking, dressing.

If these six things are together, man is together, forget it. I don't have to read your aura to find out who you are. I can read how pressed your shirt is. From that I can understand the degree to which you can impress. I don't have to see and read the character book of a woman. I can see the flow of her veil! I don't have to go anywhere. I don't have to see what she wants. The very Adi Shakti pin on the center of her turban tells me where she's coming from. I don't have to see a woman, what she's talking about, her very self, how naked she is, how covered she is, how open she is, how closed she is, it's right there. You can look anywhere you want. Net results are the same, because one thing cannot be two. Saturday cannot be Sunday, and Sunday is not going to be Monday.

Your ten words can tell the whole world where you come from, where you are and where you are going. Why is it so difficult?

I asked somebody, Are we going to Gurdwara?

    The person said, No.

    Why not?

    I don't like Gurdwara.

    Why?

There are a lot of people.

There you go. (He holds up his hand, with fingers outspread.) There are five things in you. Your thumb is id, next is personality, next is your social life, next is your career prospect, your power, your profession. Last is your communication. Beyond that you don't have anything: do you have six fingers?

Anything that you don't like you are handicapped, and through that hole you will fall. If your communication is not right, you are dead. You are menial, you are untouchable, you are unknowledgable, you can't impress.

Here, your profession, the ring finger, needs to be excellent, medium or low. If your social life, the Saturn finger, (center finger) if that's not right, your environments, your life, your totality are not right, you can't breathe. And Jupiter, (index finger) if your personality's not right, you're not right. And if your Id, (thumb) your inner self is not right, forget about everything else. That's why we do ‘thumb up, thumb down’. If your thumb is up, you're up, if it's down, you're down. I always say, Keep up. These are a few fundamental things you can learn. That's what Nanak said.

People come to me. I have a problem with sex!’ I laugh, because you have a problem with the sixth sense. You use sex as a tool. Actually you are missing your sixth sense.

’I'm lonely!’ You have a problem with God. God is the most lonely!

You must understand, every word you speak has an opposite to it. You forget it when you say certain things.

’I am hungry!’ You're demanding, you're not hungry. You can survive.

    ’I'm starving.’ You're just mad.

’I don't know what to do!’ It's your denial. It's your insult to God. It's your slap in the face of God.

’I don't know.’ How can you be human and you don't know? What is there to know? Ang Sang Wahe Guru. He is everywhere. What else can you know? Your very words can tell where you are coming from, where you are, and where you are going! And if sometime you are counseled to just shut up, it should not bother you. If you are asked to listen, it's not that bad. If you are asked, Please reconsider, let your ego not become that macho.

I was talking to one executive secretary and I said, These are my orders.

She said, I don't know whether it can be liked or not, implemented or not.

I'm going to remove her as executive secretary, I don't want her. Executive secretary is to execute, not to discuss. There's too much personality, there's no reality.

A Mukhia Singh Sahib* is a speaker, he's a mouthpiece of the whole thing. And if he's a mouthpiece to slander everybody, not to uplift everybody, we don't need him. That's not a religious Mukhia Singh Sahib. That's a stupid, slanderous Mukhia Singh Sahib. Mukhia Singh Sahib's job is to take the weak, the lowliest of the lowly, the most unclean of the unclean, most rotten of the rotten, and become a mouthpiece for that person to elevate that person to divinity, dignity and identity. We have a lot of numb people who sum up to nothing. That's not living. You have to care for people, carry people, that's sarbat kaa baalaa. That's Nanak's message. That is Nanak. You always say, I, I, I…

Sometimes learn to say, Thou, Thou, Thou… That's Wahe Guru. Sat Nam is I. My Satya, my Sat, and my Satya Sat makes it my Sat to work out, uplift, work out, and identify all, including me. And my Wahe Guru is to deliver, at my life, at my cost, at my future.

I wish you'd spare my grandchildren and the young of tomorrow. Spare them from the tyranny, insanity, and your suffocating dungeon policy. Give them the values of Nanak. Whether your chemistry is right or wrong, don't ruin their chemistry. Whether you are right or wrong, give them their future. For that, you'll be forgiven, and not forgotten. If you have not given dharma to your children, if you have not taught them the dharmic values, and you have not put in time for uplifting their spirit, you have destroyed their future, because you have a death wish to destroy yourself. Otherwise, eggplants don't grow on orange trees, and watermelons are not potatoes.

And Sikhs are not stupid. You can decide what you want for your tomorrow, as you want your tomorrow, and what tomorrow means to you, for your courage, for your wisdom, for your grace. May Wahe Guru be with you, and may Sat Nam become you, and may Siri Guru Granth guide you.

Wahe Guru ji ka Khalsa, Wahe Guru ji ki Fateh.

    Winning as a Woman

    June 29, 1992

So you have come in faith, right? This is the smallest number attending the woman's training camp we have ever had. We never ran it with profit anyway. I'm not worried about how many people have not come and what I will teach, what I'm worried about is how many divorces will follow.

When a woman has no vitality and her sustenance is not superior, there's no married life. And when a woman does not have expansion then there's no happiness as far as woman is concerned. Because you must understand, a male and a female are two different species. Practically speaking they have nothing in common. A woman gives birth, nurtures. She grows the family, nurtures the family. And practically speaking she nurtures the family with her own blood. You call it milk, I call it white blood. She transfers her blood into milk. The mechanism is very clear. A nurturing mother has no sensuality, no sexuality, she has the concentration. Her metabolism is different. From day one of her pregnancy through delivery through almost all the years, she's very involved. She needs a very powerful life, vital life, strong life. And even if she doesn't have a child, if she has a relationship and she has to deal with a man, she requires more powerful energy. With a child she can maneuver like a mother, man she can't. And if she cannot contain the man, like the word contains it, she contains he, woman contains man, female contains male, then some day their relationship will fall apart.

My idea in starting this Khalsa Woman's Training Camp was that we can keep the families together, keep the women together, teach the women strength so that we may not have divorces, we may not have broken homes. We may not have to work on men as much as we could or should, so everything would be okay. But, what is happening now is totally a different story. Story is a story.

You see the ecology around me. That can tell you where we are starting from. And one day in this camp there was a skit done. Macho-muscular-woman tried to do something. I'm very sensitive to certain things. I don't sell these veils to women, I don't have a shop. And if woman doesn't wear a veil it's very good. And if she has cut hair and she's sexy and she is nice, what's wrong with that? I'm a man too. I can see it. I can enjoy it, there's nothing wrong with that. But I don't see a woman in her physical beauty. I don't see woman in her spiritual beauty. I don't woman in her mental beauty. I see woman as a commitment of her esteem. I don't see woman in any form. Whatever you do to sell yourself, whether you sell yourself sensually, sexually, gracefully, businesswise, tradewise, that doesn't bother me. You are married to a millionaire or you are married to a pauper, it doesn't bother me. You are very sexy and horny or you are very cold and calm, it doesn't bother me. No aspect of a woman bothers me. Nothing. I'm not interested in anything.

I know the fundamental! If a woman is not in her excellence and cannot keep an excellent record of herself against fighting calamity, she's not a woman. You might come from a different angle of thought. I come totally from a different situation. I believe woman who is going to be a mother tomorrow, woman who is going to be a girlfriend, woman who is going to be a sex maid, whatever that woman is going to be–this planet Earth is a Mother Earth. This is a woman's world. Man doesn't fit in anywhere except as an associate. I have a very fundamental belief of that. And I honestly believe when a woman is cheap her word is creep and there's nothing but to weep.

It doesn't matter if somebody gives you ten million dollars to sleep with them one night or somebody tells you, Just do this little thing for two hundred million dollars. It doesn't matter if somebody rapes you to do something, or forces you to do something, somebody cons you to do something. Whatever anybody does, they have the right! I don't fight with that. But I fight for the right of the woman herself, for herself. If I agree that you all want to be loved, and for the sake of love you do something, then later on you should not cry. If you have a relationship, I don't mind…I say, you should have twenty men, twenty boyfriends and relationships, thirty husbands, six hundred children. Whatever woman does in any field is all right. Question is one simple thing: is she in self-control? Is she excellent? Can she face and win? Can she face and lose? It's a direct thing. If woman can win through everything, she's a woman to me. If she can't, she's not.

We all have to die in the end. We all have to live through life. Is our life a record of success and excellence, or is it a record of default and debauchery? That is the question for every woman. I'm a teacher. I'm not a preacher. I'm a Master, therefore I'm a very perfect student. I can study this pain. When I came to America, when I saw the woman here and the tradition women were going through, I started working. My first experience with a woman being called chick, I said, I'm going to make her an eagle! How far I'm successful and I'm not, I don't know. I don't want to know. I'm not judging it. I know you use love, you use sex, you do the sales talk, your manners and everything, you beautify. I see people face-lifting and butt-lifting and nose-lifting. You can lift everything, but you have no lifting spirit! You don't know how to lift your spirit. You are useless to me. It's a straight honest truth.

There's nothing before you except where there comes a calamity, there comes the destruction. You turn the destruction into construction and you rise above it. If the phoenix cannot rise from his ashes, there's nothing. Therefore I feel that the women in the United States have not been taught the fundamental, how to be a woman. Her guide is the movie theatres. Her guide is the stars. Her guide is the past. Our country has come through a lot of heavy changes. We were the wagon people. We loaded truckloads of whores and we started towns. When you see the Western movies you can see all the American history absolutely clearly. We are two-hundred-year-old people. America was a penal colony. People who were rejected from Europe were sent here as a punishment. So it's not something we don't know. We have a history. But we have a lot of resources, natural gifts. So we became very comfortable. We worked very hard to survive, to excel. But while we have gained great physical improvement, we have lost our spiritual strength.

I see faces very well dressed up, very well made up, very fine. But behind them there's a lot of tragedy, a lot of pain. Do you know what each woman here needs? She needs a husband, a lover, a boyfriend, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a counselor, a religious guide, personal servant, personal secretary, personal attendant, personal cook for health, and personal masseuse. If she has all that, she can survive four hours a day. Fortunately I started with Hollywood. After that there's nothing else I have to know about America. I ran away, I came here. I found it very peaceful and tranquil. And I started staying here for the summer. But as a spiritual teacher and in 3HO, I had a problem. We used to marry people and then a year later we were counseling them for divorce. That's how this camp started.

When you don't come to camp it does not bother me. But it tells me something. Because I found out there's only one area in the world, in the foothills of the Himalayas where there's never a divorce, even today! But there's a rule of thumb in that area. The entire area has one rule: that when the monsoon comes for two months no woman lives with her husband or in her village. They all move. They take their children, if they are single they go single, back to their parental home. They come back. I thought we can have five weeks or six weeks, eight weeks. We started with eight weeks but because of the economy, because of the pressure, because everybody's working today, we brought it to five weeks. And we wanted to run it as ladies camp, we wanted to call it KWTC. We used to first have volunteers for everything and then we had a shortage of volunteers and then the price went up. That's how it started and how it progressed.

It is the best camp in the world. But participation here is that, I have come here to relax. That's what it has come down to. And if that is the attitude we don't have to have a camp, we should close it. This camp was meant to endure people. We used to make people here go jump eight foot walls singlehandedly. Now it has become a very fashionable ladies camp and it is ladylike. There are so many complaints about food that finally it has become a cuisine. There's so much complaint about everything it's sickening. It's totally sickening. We started as a boot camp. We used to rub your face through the mud. Every morning we used to put you through a parade. We used to put you through the hell of the hell, so that no hell can be hell for you! That was our formula. We were not superior people or anything. We decided to take you and put you through the super hell so that when you go back, hell looks very normal to you. That was the philosophy of this camp. There was nothing behind it. There was nothing superior I could do. This is my belief. In your life, when there comes a calamity and you face it, and you succeed you get the knowledge, giaan, how to succeed in calamity and how to survive through calamity. That becomes your experience. You have only two friends in life. One is your knowledge, one is your experience. The rest is nothing. Neither money, nor environments, nor friends, nothing can protect you!

You have five fingers. Mercury-communication. Your communication should be A-1. Your Sun finger, your profession. Your profession should be top. Your Saturn finger—your social structure, manners, behavior, knowledge should be A-1, top. Your personality-none shall equal it. Your own spirit-self should be totally free and independent. You should have applied consciousness. You have an elementary consciousness. Elementary consciousness will take you to seven years. From seven years to eleven years you should have an experience of your intelligence. When consciousness and intelligence meet together then you have a personality. So first you have an elementary destiny or a personality, then you have to have a creative personality, and then you have to have applied personality. Now if I ask you, What is applied personality? you do not know what I'm talking about. Now how can you succeed in this life?

You tell me, Okay I'm married. One woman once told me, I'm married to a very rich man. He has all the money, I have all the comfort. I'm very happy, my children are okay, everything is fine.

I said, You are the luckiest one. Keep it that way. Six years later I met her. She was a living misery. I said, What went wrong?

She said, Nothing. My husband's all right, we have all the money, we have all the servants, da, da, da, da.

    I asked, What went wrong?

Can I confide in you privately? You won't mock me?

    I said, No.

She said, I'm bored to death. I don't know how to get rid of boredom.

I said, I'll come to your house tomorrow. You will not be bored, don't worry about it.

What do I have to do?

I said, I don't know. I'll make up something. So I got picked up. I went there alone, rang the bell of the house, went in, she was ready to receive me. I said, Get into a jumpsuit.

    What do you mean?

I said, Get into a jumpsuit! She got into a jumpsuit. I had made the arrangements, so the rope came in. So I went to the balcony of the house. I said, Tie the rope in down there. And it had knots. I said, Okay, put on your gloves. So she put on gloves. I said, By this rope go down.

    I have never done it!

I said, Two things will happen. Either you'll go down, you'll fall, you'll break your back, you'll be paralyzed. Then you have no problem. Then survival will be there and boredom will not be there. Or you'll make it.

    Are you sure?

I said, Yes. This is the way to get rid of your boredom. I know your staircase is so big and so decorated that there's nothing like that in the world, right? You can go down by staircase. But this is the rope. Down!

    I have not done it!

I said, No, you must have done it sometime.

Well, as a child we used to live in a treehouse. I used to go up and down by the rope.

I said, Same thing. Do it!

Okay, I'll try. But what if I fall?

I said, You will die. At the minimum you will be paralyzed, at the most you will die. It'll be all over. Now, hurry up! Down to the hill. So very hesitantly, and God knows who she prayed to, she went down. Believe it or not, her entire personality changed. But mind you it was thirty feet.

Boredom is the biggest disease. And when your knowledge of yourself is not progressive, you are bored. And you'll be self-destructive. And that has to be avoided. In life, lies do not bother you, truth does not help you. You have to be active and progressive, for your own excellence. That's the only way you can survive. You have to understand something in your own life, that you have the tragedy to be always excellent. You can't be second class, you can't be maybe, you cannot be I don't know. In your dictionary there are a lot of things, ladies, which do not apply at all.

I wish it should have been the Ladies Camp as I started it. There should have been trenches right there, there should have been walls there, and you know when you used to dress up in the evening, for my class, you used to thank your stars, thank God. You used to have a half an inch of mud all over you. Remember those days? And what a shame it was if after twenty attempts you couldn't go over the wall. Remember those days? And this is what we have become now. It used to be Khalsa Women's Training Camp for piety, for purity, for excellence…no good food…not at all! And I used to come and if I saw good food I used to get so mad. I think I was very active those days. I've gone senile perhaps. I thought you were brought here and fed nothing and given nothing and just given a super hell, so that when you go and face the world hell doesn't mean anything to you. That was actually the idea of the camp. But we couldn't advertise, "Come for eight weeks to a living hell. And study with Lucifer! Actually, to be very honest, that's how it should have been advertised!

This camouflage you are all living, facade you are all living doesn't make sense. You know, it is very funny. I should tell you something. Nobody is truthful about themselves. How can somebody who's not truthful with oneself be truthful for anybody? When you are not for yourself, how
