PREFACE
After publishing my previous book, Pre 1949 Acupuncture, I have received a lot of enquiries regarding the subject. Hence, I am once again putting pen to paper to look at the issue in greater depth. If the reader is still unclear, I can only say that this is not only a difficult subject to teach but is also to discuss. This does not mean the topic of pre 1949 acupuncture is lacking in importance, just that there are many times in Chinese language which fail to have an adequate English language counterpart.
Since the task of writing about pre 1949 acupuncture has been left up to me, so it has been up to my wife and students, especially Anne Chalmers, to take on the enormous job of directly and indirectly helping in the production of this book. Many thanks.

INTRODUCTION
By now, many readers, especially if they’ve read my last book, Pre 1949 Acupuncture, will have realised that acupuncture is more than just sticking pins in people
and more than just fixing knees and fixing backs. It really depends on whether you hold yourself up
as a doctor of Chinese medicine or simply an acupuncture therapist as most people really are today.
When discussing pre 1949 acupuncture with my patients who were medical researchers and PhD (in medical laboratory science) students and seeing what their responses were to the idea of treating people according to the time of day, etc., they were unanimous. They felt if this was the case, in fact, the reason must be biorhythms
!
What made this answer so amazing was threefold. Firstly, I knew that research at an Australian university (unnamed) has recently found while bacteria didn’t have individual
consciousnesses (of course not), they did have group
consciousnesses and are able to get away
from the effects of oncoming
antibiotics. Secondly, I came across a news report, not long ago, from a university in Chicago that
