OPENING LETTER
Dymere: January 28, 1993–August 25, 2018
Dear Dymere:
Even when I was pregnant with you, I knew you were going to be someone special. Feeling you growing inside me even though I wasn’t with your father, I still wanted to have you.
I always wanted you from day one. I already had three children, but when I found out about you, I was overjoyed. I tried my best to be a good mom. I think I did a pretty good job.
When I gave birth to you, he wasn’t there. When you turned one, he wasn’t there. Even when a child needs his dad, in his teens, he wasn’t there. He would call, but all he wanted to know what was I doing instead of asking about you.
It hurt me so much when you would ask me, Where’s my dad?
All I could say was that he wasn’t here. I really wanted to tell you the truth, but you were too young.
I tried to keep you busy so you wouldn’t ask me about him ’cause I didn’t want to talk about him, and I’m sorry for that.
I tried to make him love us, but I guess having a child doesn’t make a man stay.
Things got harder as the years passed and you grew into a man. I knew you needed your dad, but he wouldn’t communicate with me unless it was under his terms.
I decided to take matters into my own hands. I was so prepared to be a single mother. You thought you were a mistake, but you were the best thing that ever happened to me. I always told you that.
We always bumped heads. You always thought I had taken you away from him, but that wasn’t the case. I removed us from negativity and danger. He was involved in a lot of things, and I didn’t want you around all that mess. I was protecting you.
You and I bumped heads, and we had our differences, but you were my son and I was your mom no matter what we went through.
You were so outspoken and really never let anyone tell you anything. I never wanted to see you unhappy or upset. I tried to protect you through everything in life, but you, Dymere, weren’t going to let anyone stop you from doing what you wanted to do.
When I got the call that you were in the hospital, the first thing I thought was you had been hurt and I would have to take care of you.
The ride to the hospital was so long, and I kept looking at my phone. My heart started beating really fast.
