I was born the tenth of sixteen children to a preacher and praying mother. In all my years, I have loved God and I am very thankful to him for giving me a preacher for a father and a mother who prayed all day. This collection of poems is dedicated to my sisters and my brothers who have supported me all of my life and encouraged me to allow others to read my poetry. I also dedicate this collection to Leah Brown, my sister-in-law, who does not know the impact of her gift to me, a golden clip. When she handed me that golden clip, it said to me “keep your dream alive.” I am most grateful to God for giving me the inspiration to write what I feel in my heart.

    Gwendolyn,

    A Letter to Tammy

Written for my oldest daughter on her Thirteenth Birthday

It seems like only yesterday that I held you in my arms. My very first born, and from the moment I looked into your darling little eyes, I knew I loved you.

I have watched you blossom every day; gradually unfolding from a miniature replica of me, into the beautiful flower you have become. I remember holding you on my knee; sometimes we would play pat-a-cake or I would just sit there watching you… sometimes, I would sing you a lullaby and rock you to sleep.

It amazed me to the utmost when you uttered your first word, and how excited I became when you realized your tiny little feet could pitter-patter across the floor and get you from here to there. I have watched you grow, every day realizing you would continue to grow. I have watched you express your gratitude for the new pair of designer jeans you always wanted… the acceptance of things you knew you could not change.

I have watched you survive the goodness of your baby years… the sadness… and now… you are 13.

I am looking forward to the rest of my years with you… the eternity that God has given us to spend together. My heart is so full of hope that you will become the woman you desire to be. This time in your life is very special. I WILL that you know what it is to become a woman, in the true sense of the word. A woman is pure, loving, kind, sincere, helpful, satisfying, cautious, graceful, respectful, charismatic, patient… I WILL that life be proud to say it knew you when you are no longer here, and that you know life in its fullness, the good, the bad, the rich, the
