THE ASSIGNMENT
Toby, wait up,
called Gail as they streamed out of the classroom.
Toby had bolted from the 4th grade classroom ahead of Gail. When Gail caught up she was panting.
Mind if I ask why you chose me?
No big deal,
muttered Toby as he kept walking.
I know, but I am new here and you really don’t know me,
she persists.
Okay, okay. I’ll tell you but you won’t like it.
Toby stopped, turned and faced Gail square on.
I really wanted another boy, but the two smart ones were already taken. When Ms. Bethelman first told us about the assignment—how if our paper was good enough we might win the local contest, and then go to State where we could win scholarships and everything! I made up my mind, right there; I was going to win State. I want one of those scholarships.
But what does that have to do with me.
Gail went on.
Not much, just the luck of the draw, I guess.
Thanks, a lot! So, I was simply the best you could do.
I wouldn’t exactly say that. Pete suggested I choose you. He thought you were promoted to our advanced class, even though you are a year younger, because somebody at the school thought you must have some smarts. Besides, like I said, by the time it was my turn to choose a partner the best kids were long gone.
So you are stuck with me?
Maybe it won’t be too bad,
Toby said as he started to break away.
Well, when do we start?
asked Gail
Don’t rush me. I’ve got to talk to my dad first and get his take on how best to develop the project. He’s a scientist, you know.
Shouldn’t I be a part of that decision?
Gail asked indignantly.
No, not necessarily. I’m the project leader. I make all the decisions.
