Brent Philpot

Hello, this is Brent Philpot. I hope you enjoyed Stories from Grand Pa, and I am working on the second one as we speak. This is where I’m supposed to tell you a little about me. As I write this, I am forty-three years old, and I’ve had a lifetime of experiences! I was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas. I had an accident in 1979. I was run over by a delivery truck and had a lot of problems. The doctors said I wouldn’t be able to walk, talk, or see again if I made it out of the emergency room. Well, I can walk and talk, and as far as seeing, well, a friend of mine says I’m temporarily blind Monday through Friday, nine-to-five. LOL! I graduated from the Arkansas School for the Blind in 1992. I then went to the University of Central Arkansas and graduated with a fine arts and communication degree with a minor in special education in 1997. Thanks to my teachers and professors. Because of you, I had the fortitude to put out this book. I am currently working on my autobiography and hope to have it out soon. To my friends and family, thank you for the support and the checks in the mail. A special thanks goes out to MOM, Teresa Lovern. MOM, it would take a book to explain all the things that I could thank you for. By the way, MOM means “maker of miracles.”

    CHAPTER 1

Mom, I don’t have to go to Grandpa’s this summer again do I? Steven said while walking into the kitchen.

You know the answer to that one don’t you Steven? His mom said while putting the last of the supper’s dishes into the dish washer.

    Yes. Hum.

Why do you hate it so much? You used to love going to your Grand Fathers house?

"Well, the truth is, since Grand Ma passed away, there just isn’t anything to do. You and dad go off on your summer thing and me and Grandpa just sit there and watch dumb old TV till it’s time to go to bed and that’s it."

Come over here Steven. She said after sitting down at the kitchen table. Let me tell you a few things, okay, now your Grand Father isn’t going to be around much longer, so me and your dad thought that you would enjoy going up on Brushy mountain and maybe get to spend the last summer with your grandpa.

What’s wrong with him? Steven said while walking over to his mom.

Well, you know he’s getting old now and his memory isn’t what it used to be. So your father and I are thinking about bringing him closer to us. There is a Nursing Home here in North Little Rock, but we thought that maybe one more summer wouldn’t hurt. Anyway, why don’t you ask him about some of those stories that he used to tell me as a kid? They always kept me on the edge of my seat.

Maybe I will. Steven gets up to go to his room to grab his toys and video games to pack.

Remember to pack some clothes, too.

I will. He kind of shrugs, Steven is an awkward 12 years old. That time between being a kid and being a teen is kind of hard to take for some of us. For Steven it’s extra hard because Steven is disabled. He has low vision. Not only that, his imagination is expansive. When a teacher tells the class to think and write on some obscure subject matter. Steven ends up writing short novels in the time it may take you or me to write a page of scribble.

Later in Sallisaw Oklahoma, on Brushy Mountain Steven is sitting playing the latest Halo 3 video game on the 20 inch that his mom and dad bought him for his Grand Fathers house.

    I’m board!

    Want to play?

Steven looks and it is his robot that he made, to respond to what he says. No, shut down, Robby.

Okay shutting down now. Steven went into the living room and saw his grandfather asleep in his recliner. Steven was a little apprehensive about waking him, but he said to himself, I might not have many chances to talk to him so, pa Hum Can we talk?

Sure we can. What do you want to talk about, sunny? This is a nick name his Grand Father had given him since he was a kid, so Steven doesn’t mind. I just wanted… Well…

It’s kind of boring here isn’t it sunny?

Yeah, kind of! But mom told me that you used to tell her stories that kept her on the edge of her seat, or something like that.

Oh she did and you’re wondering if the old man still has some of those stories in him? I’ve heard that you’ve become quite a good teller of stories.

I write what I think of. Steven said while pulling up a chair beside his Grandpa.

Yeah, that’s kind of what I do too, only I have never written these down. They come from experience or what I can think of at the time. But I think I’ve still got it, so are you ready?

    CHAPTER 2

    THE ACCIDENT

I’m an old man now sonny, but yes I was there. Yes, I was there and I know what happened. No, nobody can tell me that this was an accident. No, when you get as greedy as the world was and people coming up with new ideas left and right, something was just bound to happen, and it did. Little did these four people know that this would be four the good of the world. So if you’ll just sit back and listen to an old man tell you a story that’s what we’ll do, okay? Where to start?

Well we’ll start from the beginning. It was about twenty years ago and people were coming up with new ideas all the time and the story will start in the capitol of Arkansas, which is of course Little Rock in a building next to the Capitol. They call this place Capitol Mall. A lot of things go on in this building a lot of people do not even realize. There is a software place where people work night and day, trying to come up with the next new-fangled invention that will revolutionize the world. They
