Prepare My Walk
All our preparation for any task is useless without God. But even with God’s help, we must do our part and prepare. His control of the outcome does not negate our responsibilities. God may want you to produce a great book, but you must learn to write. God will accomplish His purpose, and He will be able to use you if you have done your part by being prepared.
Great relationships aren’t built overnight. Couples that have been married for a long time will tell you that they had to put work into what is always in progress. Keeping the fire going and keeping their marriage intact took time and patience, and most important, they had to work at it. It didn’t just happen.
We look at some people and think, Look at those two lovebirds. I wish my spouse would hold me like that and stare into my eyes too. Yes, we hear fireworks bursting in the air; we see the band marching behind them and the sun slowly setting as their backdrop. Everything seems like the perfect picture. But we only get to see a glimpse of their relationship: the upside of their down. The truth is they are where they are in their relationship because of hard work and dedication to each other. That happy couple took the time to invest in their relationship.
In O magazine’s February 2003 issue, an article called Old Wives Tales
includes information from interviews of several couples, asking how they stayed together for so long.
The wives were asked three simple questions:
1. How did you know he was the one?
2. What made it last?
3. What advice can you give?
Everyone had a different story to tell, but the answers boiled down to respect, honor, and loving one another.
There is no magic wand to wave, no hocus-pocus, and certainly no magic when it comes to making a relationship work. I love the answers that some of the wives gave, but one stuck to my heart like glue. When asked What made it last?
