—Romans 15:13
This book was written with the intention of reaching all people who have struggled or are struggling with the trials we face in life—the tragedy, the bad news, the feelings of regret, guilt, or anxiety that so often punctuate certain seasons we experience. If you’ve ever felt like a wrong turn was taken somewhere and that there’s no going back or moving forward, I want to remind you that’s not true. Don’t give up, don’t lose hope, and don’t forget that all you have to do is take one day at a time.
In the meantime, I’m praying that our Lord gives you encouragement, courage, and the resilience to keep going. If the personal experiences detailed in this book inspire you or simply remind you that you’re not alone, my ultimate goal has been achieved. May God bless you, heal you, strengthen you, and give you hope and a future. In Jesus’ name, amen.
CHAPTER 1
My Name Is Hen
The Freedom of Forgiveness
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
—Colossians 3:12–15
A Mother’s Choice

She didn’t stop at the patient services desk before taking the elevator up to the maternity floor. She knew exactly where to go.
Can I help you?
a staff member asked as the timid woman with teary eyes and a polite smile passed her in the hallway.
Yes, please. My name is Louisa, and I’m wondering if you could help me. I had a baby here a few weeks ago.
She stopped, took a steadying breath, and continued. I gave her up for adoption, and I just want to make sure everything went okay.
The nurse recognized her, and she remembered the baby she was referring to. She—
The nurse hesitated. The baby is still here.
Louisa gasped, experiencing an avalanche of emotions: fear, sadness, happiness, confusion.
Wait here,
the nurse said. I’ll find a supervisor to explain.
Louisa soon found out that the baby had been diagnosed with infant jaundice and was recovering in the hospital; also, there’d been some issues
