An Introduction to the World of Work

About this ebook
We have subdivided the modules into personal and business since this seems a logical approach. Educationalists suggest an inductive approach to education is the best one where we go from the experience of the students to the underlying principles and therefore we have put in the personal modules first.
The objective of all the modules is both to help people within schools or colleges to be faced with realistic choices which can be answered if necessary in the classroom but also to provide material which can be used by young people working on their own. Young people need to have transferable skills and some of these can be obtained by looking at the ways in which businesses approach them. It is therefore worthwhile trying to build up a portfolio of ways in which businesses have these approaches and to see which ones are effective and why, also which ones are totally misplaced.

The supermarket chains
In the United Kingdom the large supermarket chains such as Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrisons and ASDA have dominated the food market. They are not necessarily the cheapest places to buy food, despite their massive advertising and also their price comparisons with each other. Aldi and Lidl have gained ground considerably since the credit crunch from 2008 onwards. This is because they are thought to be cheaper than the others.
Other supermarkets
There are other supermarket chains including The Co-operative, which as its name suggests is owned by the customers, and also Waitrose which is owned by the workers and is part of the John Lewis group.
Waitrose has a reputation for selling good but more expensive products than other supermarkets. The idea about higher prices is not necessarily true so it is worthwhile looking at these supermarkets. Waitrose
