I want to dedicate this book to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I want to thank him for being there for me, for allowing me to have the opportunity to talk about the things that I felt good about. Everything came from the heart. I also want to thank you, Lord, for the gift that you have given me. I never thought that I had it in me. You continued to bless me over and over even when I didn’t deserve it. It shows me how deep your love is and how precious you are.
You mean so much to me I can’t even begin to explain your love.
Thank you, Lord.
Let your will be done.
My name is Garry Saint Jean. I was born in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, on December 10, 1980. I came here to America on September 7, 1991. It was a culture shock for me. I had to get used to the lifestyle, food, and, of course, the language. Things were hard at first, but I met some cool friends in school who really made me feel comfortable. I attended IS 109 in 1991. I started learning English and catching up with the culture. School wasn’t always fun. Growing up in Queens, New York, wasn’t easy, but I managed to deal with it.
I entered Martin Van Buren High School in 1994. I really had the best times of my life in high school. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. My favorite subjects were English and History. These two subjects really caught my attention. Math wasn’t really my favorite subject. High school was a real challenge. I learned a lot about myself and how to deal with circumstances.
In my spare time, I mostly played basketball. I wanted to play for my high school team, but I never did. I mostly played for fun.
