    Chapter 1

Some people say you can’t have enough of a good thing, but what if life can’t seem to get enough of giving you the bad things? That’s how Tom was starting to feel, everything was always turning out different then what he wanted.

Tom went to the store for eggs, bread and milk one day. Instead what he got was a ride in an ambulance and a big hospital bill; luckily no one else was hurt. The accident was Toms fault, he forgot to look as he was backing up, and he pushed a van into another parked car that hit a police car while he was in the convenience store getting his coffee. The police officer was on his way out, and seen the whole thing.

This is just one thing I can tell you about Tom, to understand him I guess you really needed to know Tom in his youth. Let’s see, let’s start the story from when Tom was about ten.

Tommy got up late for school Wednesday morning, and as soon as he got there he had to report to the office to get a late pass. Well that part wasn’t so bad, it was when Tom noticed his pants were ripped out in the crotch and he wasn’t the only one, Toms worst enemy noticed too.

And he yelled; Hey look everyone, Tommy’s so pour his parents can’t afford decent clothes to send him to school in.

Tom remembers that day well, after school all the boys and a couple of the girls chased him all the way home and his pants ripped the rest of the way and fell off him.

Things aren’t so bad his grandfather told him, you’ll out grow the embarrassment before you get married.

Tom thought that’s not fair even my family isn’t there for me, they make light of my feelings. It almost likes their picking on me too.

I’m never going back to school I feel so humiliated, I just want to crawl under a rock and stay there. Why can’t you buy decent clothes for me to wear to school? He asked: All the other kids clothing don’t rip off them.

Tommy you know you have five older brothers, and when they out grow the clothes you get them, you should learn to be thankful, said his father.

Tommy was so upset he didn’t eat his supper that night, he went straight to bed didn’t bid anyone good night, just went straight to his room.

Next day of course the boys were all waiting for him they were always teasing and making fun. What’s the matter Tommy, to good for us? Then they’d all laugh.

Hey Tommy can I borrow your pants for the dance? this caused more laughing. He’d ignore them and go on into class, but it wasn’t always easy to do.

Things went ok for awhile the boys found someone else to pick on, always made Tommy mad the way they treated other people. This sort of thing went on all the way up until high school, Tommy was always alone never had any friends.

When Tom reached tenth grade he filled out, his body was real muscular from the body building he did at the gym, and he did this three times a week to relieve stress. Plus he lived on a farm and worked hard before and after school, he had cows to feed water and clean their stalls he also had to help do the milking every morning. And all the calves’ milk had to be carried from the barn to their stalls across the street.

Tom. Said his Dad one dad Why are you wasting your time at the gym, when you get all the exercise you need right here.

Because dad I like it, is all he’d say. Besides it free so why not, he thought.

Tom was now attending college, he really didn’t feel like he fit in but he promised his mom he’d go. Tom recalls the morning she was real sick no one knew how sick, they thought she had the flu. Turned out she had pneumonia, and refused to let Toms dad take her to the hospital, by the time his dad made up his mind to take her anyway she was to weak to fight it.

Tom was so angry for the longest time, he thought his dad should have made her go much sooner weather she wanted to go or not. After all thought Tom, if he’d of picked her up and carried he out to the car, which is what he ended up doing. What could she have done? Nothing, thought Tom nothing. And she’d be here today with them, instead of just a memory.

There was a girl in Toms business math class that had her eye on him, of course Tom wasn’t aware of this he just thought he was invisible no one noticed him. Teresa was asking the other kids if they knew him, awe said one boy just some hick from the back woods! She wanted to know what his name was, why do want his name? One boy asked. He’s a loner and a loser doesn’t waste your time!

She decided to stop asking the other boys, what they would know any way she thought. Instead she made a point to sit next to him, one day she dropped her paper on the floor. Tom didn’t pay any attention to her; he’d just get up and walk away. Oblivious to what she was trying to do, tried more things like that. Nothing worked.

One day she decided she just pretend to bump into him, that aught to get his attention; Tom was looking down as usual, Teresa looked the other way and Bang! She hit him so hard his books and papers went flying. This brought back memories of years in grade school when the kids did stuff like that purposely to tease him.

Tom was very defensive right off the bat; What the hell is wrong with you, he asked can’t you see where you’re going, or are you too blind and stupid to know?

Teresa just stood there for a moment, and then she started to cry.

I’m so sorry, really I am I didn’t mean too.

Then she ran off as fast as her feet would carry her. Tom really felt stupid now, Tom thought why I would have to be so meaning to her, and after all it was an accident. Tom picked up his books, mentally kicking himself the whole time. Telling him you need to let go of those years, you can’t blame the whole world for a hand full of mean boys.

Teresa didn’t go near Tom after that; she was too embarrassed to face him. Tom tried to approach her to say he was sorry for over reacting, but every time she’d see him she’d go the other way.

School was about to end for summer break, this meant going back to the farm and working for his dad until the fall when classes started up again. He wasn’t looking forward to it he hated it there; the memories for Tom weren’t very good. And now Tom’s dad wanted to marry another woman, and Tom didn’t like it because mom only passed away eight months ago. He heard he started seeing her two weeks after she died, this made Tom angry to think that’s all she meant to him.

He was thinking of staying in town there was a lady that rented rooms by the week, and there was a job at the mill right down the road within walking distance. He decided to apply for the job to see if he would get it before he made up his mind.

One week before college let out the manager at the plant called him in for an interview. Yes sir; one pm yes, I’ll be there thank you Good bye.

Tom put on the best clothes he had, and left early to make a good impression. He knew if he got this job he could be on his own and not have to go back there. And he really liked the idea of that.

Once he was there the receptionist told him to have a seat, the manager would be with him soon. He looked at a magazine hoping this would settle his nerves some.

The manager come over and reached out to shake his hand; So are you Tom? He asked

Yes sir. he said Tom replied

Do you have any experience in this kind of work? the man asked Tom

No sir; but I learn fast and I was raised on a farm so I am used to hard work, and I’m willing to do any kind of work. answered Tom

Tom; I like your attitude, you seem mature for one so young. I think we’ll give you a try, if you work out we’ll keep you on full time.

Tom, said well only thing is sir I returned to college in the fall, is that going to be a problem with me getting the job?

No son; I commend anyone getting education, nope we’ll just work around that. You can work part time or full time once you’re back in school, if you think you’re able too. It’s entirely up to you, I’m flexible said the man.

When do I start? asked Tom

Well next week is your last week of college, how about you start two weeks after that, that’ll give you time to find a room for the summer.

Only thing, is said Tom. I don’t have the money to rent a room; I will have been working first."

Look. said the man Here’s the number of a boarding house tells Maude Jack sent you, and you need a room I’m sure she’ll set you right up.

Bright and early the next morning Tom called the number Jack gave him.

Hello Ms. my name is Thomas White; I’m calling you because I need a room.

You come on over sonny we’ll set you right up she said.

First I need to tell you I start my job in two weeks, I won’t be able to pay until I get my first wages. The man at the plant, ah Jack said to mention he sent me.

Ah not a problem, you come on over and I’ll give you the key and a number to your room and you can move in any time.

She gave him the address and he went straight over. The time came he was done with classes for the summer, packing his stuff didn’t take long he didn’t have much. He walked over to the house where he would be staying, unlocked the door and went inside.

He felt really great about this; he didn’t want to go back to that farm if he didn’t have to. Tom never gave it much thought on how his dad would feel about him not going back to the farm, he called him from his room he wanted let him know his plans.

Son I expected you to be on that bus, Dagnabbit boy. "I need you here I want your
