Tom looked on with concern as Martin, his boss, called the room to attention.
‘I’m sure none of you will be surprised by this announcement. I wanted to inform you all of my intention to retire in three months.’
He paused for a moment… ‘With luck, that will give us all time to persuade Tom to apply for promotion.’
Tom kept his eyes focused on his computer screen as his workmates voiced their agreement. He didn’t want his boss to retire and he certainly didn’t want to apply for his post.
Tom looked around the room and realised when Martin retired, it would leave him, approaching 40, the oldest and the longest-serving member of the maintenance team. He liked routine in his life: work, meeting friends, playing drums, visiting his family and enjoying live music. His life was how he and his cat Miss Toni liked it – uncomplicated – as a single man in his small semi on the edge of the village.
