    THE RUN

As Tom ran around the track, he noticed a lot of birds following him. He stops running, and the birds stop flying. Tom thought it was odd. He wondered what it was about him that was making the birds follow him. Tom starts back to run, and the birds began to follow him again. He stops again, and the birds do too. He sees some of his running friends and runs back toward them, and the birds followed until he came close to his four friends and then they settled on the track.

What’s going on Tom? You’re attracting birds like a singing fairy princess. Jim said.

I don't know, I just looked back, and there they were.

Looks like you are still attractive, Mary said,

To some, yes, I guess I am, Mary Mae, Tom said snidely.

Well, let's go; We got to finish this run before we lose the rest of the day. Said Jim.

They began to run, but Mark and Bennie are hesitant to run through the birds. Then Mark remembers what the birds were doing.

Hey wait!! He yells, but it was too late.

The birds fly up in a scare. As they went up and above them, the birds began to poop all on Tom, Jim, and Mary.

You interrupted their poop break! Mark laughed with excitement.

The three of them ran for the outdoor showers that were set over by the pool area. Mark and Benny continued to finish their run as they laughed at the three.

They meet back at the parking lot after everyone got cleaned up.

Well Tom, it looks like you have that special attraction, Mark said.

Hilarious Mr. One date in your whole life.

Come on guys, enough jokes, Mary said.

Tom what did you do to the birds to make them want to do that? Jim asked.

Nothing, I didn’t do anything to them. Those birds must have gotten jealous when I joined you guys. You know, flock jealousy. He laughed.

You are the only one who has been jealous since Mary got with Benny, Mark said, making everything awkward.

That was her choice, even though she loves me. But that's life, huh.

Mary draws close to Benny, I am with my husband. I love Benny, and you just must accept it. You are not the marrying type and would never have time for me. How could I love someone who is never around to love?

Tom looks at Marry and Benny, As I said before, I hope you guys are happy.

We are going to be very happy, isn't that right Benny?

Benny was slow to answer feeling the awkwardness of the conversation.

Yes, I’m happy, Mary, replied Benny as he slowly lifted his eyes to Mary’s.

Tom walks off, and Mark joins him.

Why did you have to go there?! Tom whispered angrily. We haven't been a couple since senior prom.

I know Tom, but you still want her, Mark said.

There is nothing I can do, Mark, and bringing it up again is just messing with our friendship and run.

So, you just walk away and give up. You know how you feel about Mary.

Look, even if there were a chance, I wouldn’t dare interrupt their marriage. Benny is a great friend, and he is happy, and I have moved on.

You haven’t moved on. You haven’t dated anyone since Mary. It’s like your heart is stone towards loving anything or anyone again.

I know, she hurt me, I told you that. She stood me up and went to prom with Benny and then married him, it has been so weird trying not to let the pain of losing her drive me into a deep depression. I can't let that happen. I can't let it touch my heart. There are plenty more fish in the sea.

But not like her. Right, Tom.

No not like her Mark, but I can't let her or anyone pierce my heart.

After all these years your heart is still hardened, how will you find love with a stony heart.

Love is a choice my friend, I just choose not to.

Mark and Tom arrive at Tom's apartment.

    I forgot my key.

Ok, let's just push the button to your apartment and open the door.

Really bro. I'm not home so who’s going to push the button.

    Oh, right.

    Tom pushes another apartment number.

    Hello?

Hello, Mr. Townsend, it's Tom. I forgot my keys.
