DEDICATION
I dedicate this book to every child who has been abused, the child who is being abused and to the memory of those who died at the hands of his or her abuser(s).
INTRODUCTION
I don’t know about you, but have you ever started doing something and then wonder why you’re doing it? Well, that is how I began writing poetry about the abuse, killing of and exploitation of children—especially babies. The first poem I wrote on this subject was early in 2003. The poem is entitled Heaven Bound
and is about a little boy named Terrell Peterson. Many of you might remember that story. Thinking about it now brings tears to my eyes. Anyway, six years later while having breakfast with friends, a woman at the table said she worked at DFACS and remembered the story well because he was the little boy with all those cigarette burns on his back.
When she said that, I nearly fell off the chair because to me, that was an affirmation. You see, I thought I was writing a make believe story or a fictional poem. I had no earthly idea that some of what I was describing in the poem actually happened. I dedicated the poem to all babies, children—boys and girls—who had died or were abused at the hands of a loved one or an adult figure.
After writing that poem, I don’t think I wrote any similar poems because I was into writing about love; the ups and downs of falling or being in love and yes, I wrote lots of poems about sex, etc. BUT, after a few years of ‘being in love’ poems, I would see pictures of beautiful smiling babies on the TV news that had been abused by either the parent or boyfriend of the parent. In the meantime, I stopped watching the news because not only was the news very depressing but it became more difficult for me to write about love, etc. Would you believe I became less and less motivated to write about anything? Oh, I had friends encouraging me to pick up the pen; one even suggested I purchase a book about becoming motivated. I tried their ideas but nothing. I
