As I Ponder - Ingrid Green Adams

    The You I See

When I look at me do I like

    the you I see?

I sat and asked myself this

    question one day wondering what

    I would say

My answer didn’t come out at

    first no, not at all

I had to stop and think

to give the correct answer this

    wasn’t so small

Of a deal, no this was a very

real and deep thing to think about

    can’t you see?

I had dug deep inside had to

unlock all my hurt and swallowed

pride to know if I had liked me

That’s one of the problems in life

We hide our true feelings because

we’ve been used & abused by all

    the strife

    Yes the troubles that come

    along our way

It’s so easy to lock them up in

the back of our minds to think on some other

    day

But guess what? that some other

day never comes no not at all

And here we sit and wonder

again as we attempt to rise from

    another curve ball

that life has thrown our way

    oh yes it’s true

Just keep on livin’ you’ll definitely

get some curve balls thrown at you

And when this happens will you

be able to handle your life and

    like what you see?

It’s no easy task you’ve got to

be deeply rooted in God to stand

    this life’s challenges baby

So again I sit and ponder do I

    like the you I see?

Yes now I’m ready to answer that

question ’cause my God has equipped

    me

With the strength to look in the

mirror at myself and say yes

I like the you I see and do you

    know why?

’Cause I believe in the man who

hung on the cross for me and died

I believe he loves me if no

    one else ever will

I believe this because he made

me, knows all my faults and stands

    beside me still.

He doesn’t care if I wear the latest

    fashions, have money or clout

He’s only concerned with my love

of his people yah that’s what he’s

    about

So when I look in my mirror I

can tell you who I see

I see a proud African American

woman and yes I like the you I be

I see a single mother who has

given so much to so many yes it’s true

    I see a broken hearted

X wife who moved one with her

life as her marriages were through

I see a confident, faithful friend indeed

who’s always there for a neighbor or a friend

    in need

And last but not least I see a prayerful

woman who loves her God ’cause he’s

    always been there for me

I love my God because when I

look at my you I know who I

    see

And it’s because of him I can

rise and march on to victory

Well at least until he calls me

    home ’cause heaven’s the place

    I wanna be

Now that my question is answered

may I ask it of you?

When you look in the mirror do you

    like the you—you see too?

If you don’t stop and think why

is this? How can this be?

Is it because Jesus is not in

    my life helping me?

If that’s the case, open up your

    heart and let him in

then just through out all the

hurt and pain & swallow your pride

    so you can win

    Your rightful place in heaven

oh yes there’s a spot for you there

    Trust Jesus, do his will

    and you’ll find he answers

    every prayer

Make no mistake he made a believer

    out of me

’Cause for years without him I

didn’t like the you I would see

Time waits for no one so please

    don’t delay

Take the time to get it right with

    Jesus, yes do it today

I did it and I am glad yes

    truly glad you see

’Cause now I know for myself

I like the you that makes me

    ME!

    I Can See Clearly Now

    I can see clearly now

    Remember back in the day

    When everything was simple, life

was good and kids were full

    of fun and play?

But what is this? Please tell

    me what is going on?

    Did someone change the sheet

of music that was playing yes

    who decided to change

    the song?

Oh yah the music’s change, the

tempo off and the beat’s not

    the same

    We are allowing someone else

to take over and change our game

you say change is good yes

sometimes this is true I know

But not this kind of change ’cuz

my God has told me not so

This kind of change is not good

    for you or me

this kind of change only leads to bad

things lots of pain and misery

    Take for instance our children

they’re growing up so fast these

    days

they’re no longer staying in school

    or reading books they’re

    in a hip hop craze

Now that wouldn’t be a bad thing

    no not at all

If they would hip hop to some

    Algebra or black history notes

as they walked down the hall

See now at school no one wants

to be smart, no one wants to be

    labelled a nerd

Now I think something is terribly

    wrong here now isn’t this

    absurd?

To think that wanting to challenge

    your brain and show some

wisdom would be a foolish thing

    now don’t you agree

    Children don’t worry just

Keep going to school, learn all you

can, please take it from me

If we are gonna have half a

chance for success in this life

it’s got to be through education

    I thought you knew?

Oh no you don’t want to hear

the horror stories of our past

or do you even have a clue?

Of a time when our people had

    to fight for an education

    oh yes it’s true

Many of our kind lost their lives

to simply be able to read and write

like we do today yes like me and you

And now we want to deny ourselves

    the opportunities that our past

    forefathers dreamed of us having

    one day

that’s a slap in the face to

folks of our kind if I must

    say

But just listen to me ’cuz I can

see yes I can see clearly now

    oh yes it’s true

Yes, we are here this is our

country this country the land of

    the Red, White and Blue

our forefather’s blood is shed from

sea to shining sea oh yes it’s true

their blood was shed to make our

    beds better, yes those beds

much later, now the beds for me and

    you

So my people let’s stop all

the violence it’s time to think

    things through

If we don’t do it for ourselves

    then who Lord who?

Who would want that job? to help

a people who are so smart you see

that they hurt each other just to take

away the pain from all the hurt

    tossed upon you and me

Who would step up to the plate

and hit the home run to bring

us in to home—yah who would

do that for me or you?

Stop thinking my friend, my brother

cuz our forefathers had the answers

    They had the clue

that’s why I can see clearly now

    and this I know

I can see clearly cause our past

has all the answers our ancestors

    told us so

Just slow down, review our history

take a minute to look around

Our people, folks that look like you

& me were always truly a people kept

    down

    Maybe by others standards

But never by God’s you see

And that my friend, my brother

is what our forefathers have taught

    me

I’ve learned the lessons from them

    and I’ve learned them well

You can’t beat our blue eyed brothers

unless you sit in school a spell

    Our forefathers paved the way

    oh yes it’s true

They paved the way for us to enjoy

this freedom of our country that they

    never knew

Saw it comin oh yes they truly

    did you know

So it’s a sin and a shame no

if you let all their hard work go

If you feel their love for us like

I do then you don’t need me to

tell you what you’ve got to do

you know you’ve got to stand up

and take your place in this life

    Stop acting stupid, playing crazy

and causing all sorts of trouble

    and strife.

    Get your head together like

me and let’s do this thing

for us oh yes it’s true

this is our land, our country

this is our Red White and Blue

Some things are worth dying for

and this cause is yes this

    one is right you see

    It’s the one my forefathers

gave their lives for and now look

    at you and me

But don’t do it for them, do it

    for your children and your

    children’s children so

    they can agree

    let’s set things

straight again so they can see

clearly like back in the day

Let’s get back to a time when life

was oh so simple, life was good

and kids were full of fun and play!

    Being A Mother

To me there could be no job

    greater oh no such other

than the job of simply being

    a mother

A job that is oftentimes never

    really appreciated you see

    By our children yah they’re

    the folks we love unconditionally.

Yes they’re the little guys that

we’ve fed and read stories to

    down through the years

the lil peeps we’ve shared many

    a happy moment and unfortunately

have made us cry many unhappy tears

But being a mother is what we

    do at best

If you are like me we trust God

    to do the rest

You see I thank God for allowing

me to be a mother oh yes it’s true

But even I had to realize I’m

    no superwoman who

Can dry up all the tears, hurt

and pain in all of my children’s

    lives each and every night,

Lord I tried though, truly tried

and I know that’s not right

You just want me to do my very

best and have faith in you

then I must turn things over

and let you do what you need to do

I always say if you’re gonna

pray don’t worry and if you’re

    gonna worry don’t pray.

Well, I choose to pray so it’s

    on my knees I stay.

Yes I stay on my knees both

    day and night

You see I’m a mother and my

kids count on me to make things

    right

I don’t have all the answers

never said I did you know

But I always tell my kids

I’m close to the one who holds

the whole world in his hands

    though

So I have learned to take all

My burdens to you Lord and

I’ve learned to leave then there

’Cause I know you can handle

    them, you’ll handle them with

    care

And give me the answer or the

    wisdom to have a clue

As to how I need to handle all

    of life’s situations, I know I can

    depend on you

To give it to me straight without

    a doubt

If I listen to you, obey your

Word then with folks I will

    gain lots of clout

Yah then folks will begin to

    believe what I say

Cause I’ll tell them how I

    get my breakthrough by being

obedient to you it’s the only way

To win this war we’re in here

    in this life,

    there’s no time for arguing,

fussing no more time for that

    strife

No as a Mom your lil folks

are always looking up to you

So you’ve got to stay focused

    to successfully do all the

    things you need to do

    See being a single parent

    I’ve seen it all,

    I’ve been through so much

and so much more let me recall

Of a time when there was always

More month at the end of my money

Yes at the end of my dime,

But when you know Jesus like

    I do, don’t you know you’re rich

    all the time?

Just a lil talk with Jesus has

made it right for me oh yes it’s

    true

He’s told me to just be faithful

and continue to do the things that

    I must do

He said to hold my head up high

when I can’t pay my mortgage

    and never fret,

’Cause I’ve never missed a house

note with him on my side yet

Don’t know how or when the money

is coming never know what is

    in his plan

I just do as he said and that’s

    to always understand

    that when you delight yourself

in him he will give you the

    desires of your heart,

So my mind is made up, I stay

focused on his Will and his

way I do things the way

    Jesus would from the start

    Take it from me, sometimes

    its rough and lonely being

    a single mother all alone

    Trying to raise your family,

provide the best for them while

praying they stay away from all

    hurt and just stay home

And not get hung up on hanging

out in the streets like our brothers

and sisters do, yah know who

    are no good

this is not what Jesus expects

    of
