About this ebook

Having been raised in the system, Louis never envisioned he'd have the life he had: A loving partner, his dream job bringing music into the world and three children, four if you counted Dario; a shy, anxious and extremely talented student who didn't recognise his worth. Louis stepped in to be his father when Dario's own had failed him.

Still, as the years went on and Dario sunk deeper into depression, Louis began to question if his efforts were working. Would Dario ever get better? Would he stop trying to earn the love his parents would not give? Would he ever embrace his true self and learn to love him?

So many unanswered questions but amongst all the uncertainty the biggest fear was what would happen if Louis didn't try to save him; that he might lose Dario, forever.

This series should be read in order due to different vantage points over the same timelines.

Louis was just arriving at the school. This was the first time his students would be part of a major recital. He wasn’t so much nervous as he was excited. Working out of his house, the best promotion was his students’, so he really needed this to go well. He’d joined with two other independent music teachers so there would be an array of talent. His expertise was in guitar, voice, violin, and beginner’s piano.

Stop being such a baby and get out from the car.

As Louis heard this he turned to see where the voice was coming from. He wasn’t surprised at the source of the commotion. Not too far away was one of his students, who was by far the most anxious child he’d ever come in contact with, yet also the most gifted.

Everything in him was screaming to go over, but before he did something irrational, his very pregnant girlfriend put her hand on his shoulder. He turned to look at her, and they shared a knowing glance.

Not here. Not now, she said softly.

Louis smiled taking her hand in his, bent over and kissed her belly. He loved being a father. It was the best thing that life had given him, but he often felt he was shooting in the dark. Louis was raised in multiple foster homes and never connected with any. All he had was music. Without it, he would’ve been lost. Then one magical day, he bumped into Latoya, and everything changed. Louis smiled as he thought back to that fateful day she ran into him, quite literally.

He was walking out of a corner shop and this random girl grabbed him, wrapped her arm in his saying, Just act like you know me.

Next thing he knew, he was shielding her from some psycho ex. Louis kicked this guy’s, whose name he couldn’t quite recall, ass. It was then when he turned around to see the most beautiful creation he had ever set eyes on in his twenty years of life. Skin the shade of lightly brewed tea in a clear glass and deep brown eyes that stared straight past his heart and stole his soul.

He learned soon after that she was hoping another man would’ve avoided a fight; otherwise she would’ve fought him herself. Her plan to avoid the fight failed, but here she was seven years later about to have their third child, and he couldn’t be happier.

Latoya was the complete opposite of him. Raised in a loving and stable home, graduated with honours in actuarial science, she was the brains and the money of the relationship. Before life got better and she landed her dream job, Latoya was his biggest supporter. She never let him quit his dream of giving music to the world, even when they were struggling as young parents and could barely pay the bills. Louis couldn’t see himself making it this far without her.

I know, Louis said, coming back to the present, but I’m here struggling to be a dad when I have no reference, and they know better and still don’t treat him right. Sometimes I wish they would hit him so I can actually do something.

You don’t want to be the bad guy, Louis, and wishing ill on a child is bad form, no matter your intentions. Just be his vocal coach for now. If it’s meant for you to be more, you’ll know. Life will find a way.

Louis nodded, closing the trunk of his car. He picked up his youngest boy while his wife held the hand of the four-year-old,
