    English

Kevin was walking down the hall to his last class which was by far his favourite class of the day. The building was abuzz with normal high school activity: couples making out, couples breaking up, gossip being spread. Popular high school cliques staring down enemy cliques. The self-proclaimed beautiful people ignored those they considered beneath them. The weaker kids tried their hardest to be invisible so the popular ones would walk by them. The single people lusted after the boys and girls they could not have because they were usually dating the other popular kids.

    High school was overrated.

Kevin was dressed in his favourite pair of faded cargo pants and a t-shirt. He liked them because they fit his legs. He would never understand the skinny jeans thing. He had thick thighs and a fat ass, and he couldn't fit comfortably in them. He noticed most men, unless they were slim, could not reasonably fit into skinny jeans but they wore them anyway. They were everywhere from the nerds, to the jocks, the thugs, just ugh.

Kevin walked into class, took his seat and readied himself to pretend like he was interested in what was going on. This chair and this classroom had only one real use to him and seconds later it came through the door; tall, biracial, single, and the best thing to happen to Orangeville High. His wavy hair was pulled back into a ponytail, and his skin looked extra delicious. His voice drizzled like melted chocolate.

Dario was the only thing worth being in high school for.

Dario came in and sat beside Kevin. What were the odds that after three years of school he'd finally be close enough to smell his crush? And he smelled like heaven. Conspiring to have him sit here was the best decision Kevin made in life so far.

    Kevin.

Kevin was so lost in his overactive, disgustingly dirty thoughts about Dario he almost didn't respond.

Dario.  Kevin was waiting to see which game Dario would initiate today.  He lived for their banter and English had the best audience.

Can I borrow your work for this class?

So Dario was going for cool dumb Jock trying to schmooze his way into not having to do the work. The irony of this particular game was Dario was the smart one. Kevin, however, was ready to play.

Fuck no. If you are going to fail, you can do it without my help.

Damn. Right to the heart. Dario’s fake hurt was more than impressive, and his pout was ridiculously sexy. "Seriously, you are the only person who likes me that treats me so rough. I'm starting to think you don't like me. I'm not white enough for you, am I?"

What? Kevin gave him an incredulous look. This was not the game he had mentally prepared for.

Dario leaned back in his chair and didn't glance in Kevin's direction. Kevin took a deep breath. Dario did catch him eyeing up Dean on Tuesday, so he couldn't refute that he liked white guys. But he liked all men. Anyone could attest to that.

You're right. I don't really like half and half. Dario caught Kevin a little off guard, but not enough to ruin a good comeback.

Burn, Cindy said. The two of them high fived. Dario sighed in response.

Besides, someone has to treat you like a normal person Jockboy, Kevin said.

Dario was not a fan of ‘Jockboy.’ Could you not call me Jockboy.  One sport does not a jock make.

That would be no. And no. I can think of some other things I could do to you though but—

Gross. Why do you always have to go there? Dario grimaced and made a show of being disgusted by the very thought of them naked together.

What can I say? You pump the blood into my penis.

Is everything about your penis?  Like Alan after lunch?  No, Alan was homeroom.  Jake, no Denis.  Denis was before lunch.  Mark! That’s who lunch was.  Mark.

    Are you judging me?

If the hoe fits. I mean shoe.

He has a point, Cindy offered.  Kevin glared at her.  How dare she take Dario’s his side?  At least Milton wasn’t here to help team up against Kevin. No worries; Kevin he was ready.

It’s not always about my penis. Sometimes it’s about yours. I've seen it, and it's pretty.  One of the most photogenic—

Fuck, that's it. There will be no talking about my penis! Dario unintentionally said that much too loud. Another point in this game they played for Kevin: embarrassing one of the most popular guys in school. There should be a medal for this. Especially when he wore that popularity with such awkwardness.

Class was uneventful. Unless you include more banter and Dario embarrassment. This odd friendship they had developed the first month of school was the more than Kevin could've dreamed for. Like it could've gone very bad, but Dario came in that third day of English, saw that the seat by Kevin was the only one free, and sat in it. He could’ve panicked and not even come into the class. Kevin smiled as he remembered back to the day.

    ***

It's obvious fate wants you to be with me. This being the only seat in class is a sign from the gods.

You think? Dario frowned slightly, like he thinking it was more like a conspiracy than fate.  He didn’t trust Kevin.

I do. Your shirt's a bit tight, Kevin teased.

    Is it.

I’m not complaining. Just saying. I could see your abs in another galaxy.

Okay, we are crossing a line.

And your jeans are too tight for your penis. Everyone notices.

Really? Dario looked down and yes, skinny jeans were not his friend. Three years of high school and no one told him his dick was on full display. Not only that, but how the hell had he not noticed this? Just don't do anything weird, Dario reiterated.

The hottest guy in school, who is prone to anxiety attacks, is not having one when I’m overtly flirting with him, even laughing at my inappropriate jokes, and you don't want me to cross lines? Oh, it's going to get weird. I promise you.

    ***

That was moments before Kevin told him he had nice hands. Since that day, Kevin always held up that end of crossing the line during English class. It still got laughs. Just like this day.

    High school was finally interesting.

Beef with a Side of Beef

Kevin approached his car, lost in a zone thinking about Dario. The only girls he associated with were the ones who wore their femininity like a badge of honour. Kevin was nothing like that. Even if Dario was gay, Kevin didn't believe he was feminine enough to be his type. Milton was probably more his speed. It made him sad a bit but did nothing to stop him from crushing on Dario. Kevin tried to watch Dario drive away, but an annoying screech interrupted his thoughts.

    "Kevin!
