Tumi to the Rescue - Dr. Cindi Mendoza

    CHAPTER 1

    Making New Friends

Follow me, James said as he led the way down the path filled with people. The other man took up the rear of the line as we all walked single file through a big maze of really tall Sudanese people. We went almost to the very back of the area to a tent. It had seven small cots set up. Wow, he really did expect us.

You girls might want to get comfortable. We will leave on the bus at 5:00 a.m.

I tried not to make a face. 5:00 a.m.? I thought it was still dark then. I looked at James closely to see if he was joking with me. Maybe he was joking. The other girls looked at me then at James.

There is only one bus out, and it leaves very early in the morning for Addis Ababa. We have to make that bus to catch the next one that goes to Kenya.

Oh boy. This sounds like another adventure in Jesus, I thought.

I will leave you girls here until dinner, then we can go together when it's time, James told us.

We each sat down on a cot and looked at each other. Nyakaka was still missing amid the camp somewhere, and we had added a new little girl. She was maybe about my age.

Hi, I said, I am Tumi. I am from Kenya. The Lord Jesus has sent me to help my new friends here get to safety. They were at their home in South Sudan, and then war ravaged their village. We walked here. It took us three days. But—I have to say—it was pretty awesome. Angels surrounded us the whoooolllllle time. Mean guys were shooting at us, but it never even came near to us. It's like we were bulletproof!

All the girls were smiling, remembering how the angels had helped us escape the mean guys.

    Hello, I am Tut!

    I’m Nyadona.

Ma’ah lay. I’m Nyaliep. (That's hello in Nuer, the language of the South Sudanese).

    Hi! I’m Nyagoa.

I am so happy to meet you, said the young girl. My name is Doup. I am from South Sudan. I came to the camp with some other people. When I was hiding, I saw a group of people hurrying away from the burning village. I ran and caught up with them and walked to the camp. I don’t know where my family is. I have been at this camp for one month. Yesterday, one of the old men was going to trade for me and make me his wife.

"What? I was shocked. You are only a little girl. How can an old man make you his wife?" That was no life for a small girl! I thought for sure she was making up stories. This was not funny though. Some people have a very strange sense of humor, I think.

"Well, an old man had been watching me since I arrived at the
