Tumi to the Rescue - Dr. Cindi L. Mendoza

    CHAPTER 1

    RUN

Yummy! Chapatti and green grams were one of my favorite dishes. Well, I definitely liked the chapatti best. The buttery flavor on the round tortilla just melts in your mouth. I have to remember to scoop some of the green grams up into my chapatti.

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon in Nairobi, Kenya. I was just finishing up my lunch with Mom and Dad. After church, we always ate together and then had a quiet time. I used to roll my eyes.

Quiet time,’ right! That was Mom’s nice way of saying she was going to take a nap and the rest of us should be quiet! Ha-ha. But now, I had all afternoon to put on my special superhero uniform and see who needed the Lord’s help. Sunday afternoons were awesome sauce now!

My favorite Sudanese auntie (an auntie is a name we call an older female; she isn’t really my aunt) is Mary. Mary has done lots of different jobs for Mom, and now she has learned to sew. Mary’s husband and kids were killed in the war in South Sudan. I know Mary loves to make me things because she is thinking of her own children that have died. I love her too.

Mary made my golden girl superhero costume. I have golden socks, a golden cape, a golden belt that holds my sword, and my black leotard with a cross on it. I know I can do anything when I am wearing this. It’s as if Jesus is wrapped tightly around me, protecting me and guiding me.

I went skipping up the stairs, humming the song we had learned in Sunday school that day. "This is how I fight my battles; this is how I
