    Summary

The Singles Game, a novel by Lauren Weisberger, follows the rising star of Charlotte Charlie Silver, a 24-year-old tennis pro who has set her sights on winning her first Grand Slam tournament. Through tribulations that include an injury, an abusive coach, and countless grueling practice sessions and games, Charlie comes to realize that the old saying is true: It’s not whether she wins or loses that matters; it’s how she plays the game.

Charlie’s story begins on one of the most exciting days of her life, the first time in her career she plays at Wimbledon. Her happiness is pierced by a piece of distressing news she receives just moments before her game begins. The soles of Charlie’s shoes, which are pink, are against the tournament’s regulation white, a detail that both Marcy, her coach, and Nike, her corporate sponsor, somehow overlooked. The alternate shoes that Charlie is forced to wear fit poorly. They tear her feet to shreds, but she’s winning anyway. Before she can vanquish her opponent, Charlie slips and falls; worse, she blacks out during the medical timeout.

It turns out Charlie has injured her Achilles tendon and broken her wrist, which will require about six months of rehabilitation. Five weeks into her recovery, Marcy tries to have a conversation about what will happen if Charlie can’t bounce back. Charlie, incredulous and determined to make a full recovery, dismisses Marcy’s concerns out
