Introduction
A few years ago, I decided to stop buying self-help books and start listening to my intuition, to help guide me through challenging situations in my life. I realized I have lived with myself longer than any other person on this Earth, so maybe I had some good ideas on what works best for me.
This may seem like an odd declaration from the author of this self-help book. However, stick with me. This declaration will help you as well.
I read so many self-help books, but I found them repetitive. It seemed like all I had to do was think happy thoughts, reframe my stories and live in the present moment. BAM! I would blissfully live the life of my dreams.
And I did have moments when everything seemed to fall into place. My husband and I understood each other better, my kids cleaned their room when I asked, and challenging acquaintances didn’t seem to bother me as much.
However, life would happen and I would fall into my old ways. I felt like a failure. I bet Byron Katie, Eckhart Tolle, or Deepak Chopra isn’t binge-watching Netflix and eating potato chips every time their daughter yells at them for never having time to watch her newly-choreographed dance.
I assumed that glorious life of living in my manifested dream house in a new world along with all the other flat-bellied, skin-glowing, blissed-out spiritual beings wasn’t for me.
As I let go of the need to follow the latest 12-week plan for successful communication, or six easy steps to happiness, and began to listen to my own inner nudges, things began to shift. Some may label it as a spiritual awakening. I believe it was nothing more than proof that I was no longer existing on a mental, emotional and spiritual foundation of the size of a toothpick.
This shift wasn’t all full of blissful unicorns and rainbows. It had its dark moments. There was a part of me that feared this feeling of being at one with the moment and accepting others as the way they are would end. And that part of me was right. It did end. Yet it appeared again.
I noticed this pattern of expansion and contraction continued. The more I allowed this flow of life, the more it didn’t seem as scary or as horrible. It actually became my new normal.
How could this be? I thought the goal of self-improvement was to arrive at a place of eternal bliss. Worry, doubt and fear were no longer meant to be a part of my life. I put in the work, and this is my reward: a continuous flow of expansion and contraction, an ordinary life full of simplistic abundance, no angels sounding the trumpets of my arrival into heaven on earth.
Sure, I enjoyed not being caught up in a drama or affected by the chaos in the world that didn’t apply to my present moment. I seemed more comfortable in my own skin. However, shouldn’t there be more?
Maybe there is more to it. However, I no longer desire searching for it. I’m quite content living my life one moment at a time: taking the next healthy step as the version of me that
