Summary
The Rainbow Comes and Goes by Anderson Cooper and Gloria Vanderbilt is the result of a year of email exchanges between a son and his mother. They explore themes of life, love, and loss. When Vanderbilt was nearing her ninety-first birthday, she was hospitalized with a respiratory infection. This led Cooper to consider her mortality and to wonder if he and his mother knew one another as well as they could. So, on the occasion of her upcoming birthday, the pair began a year-long correspondence in which Vanderbilt explored her childhood and life. The two authors also share their respective personal philosophies on resiliency and life with all its traumas and celebrations.
Gloria Vanderbilt was born in 1924. She was the only daughter of railroad scion Reginald Vanderbilt and Gloria Morgan, his second wife. When Vanderbilt was 15 months old, her father died of cirrhosis. This left Vanderbilt, along with her half-sister from her father’s first marriage, the beneficiary of a $5 million
