    In America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great, Dr. Ben Carson highlights how his impoverished upbringing, faith in God, and study of successful Americans inspired him to strive for, and achieve, greatness.

    Carson, an African American, grew up in a single parent household in the inner cities of Detroit and Boston during the Civil Rights Movement. From that experience, Carson learned at an early age about racism in America. Carson understood that African Americans did not have the same rights and opportunities as other segments of the population from experiences such as being taunted by white boys at a park where he supposedly did not belong because of his skin color to watching white police officers terrorize young black people on the news. A strong desire to prove to all that he deserved the same opportunities was born out of these and other negative experiences he had.

    Carson first shares the knowledge gained from his years of study and reflection about the discovery and colonization of America. He describes early Americans as willing to sacrifice for future generations and rebel for the freedoms Americans enjoy, but may be in danger of losing. Specific emphasis is placed on the dangers of big government and over-taxation, issues Carson feels are impeding the progress of America today.
